My dr. just ran a series of blood work... 1 test was an ANA test. A nurse called me today and said that my ANA was positive and that i needed a liver biopsy. What does this mean? I am supposed to hear from the dr. or another nurse who can explain it o me better on Monday, but I just was curious if anyone else had a clue as to what this means? Thanks so much!

# 1 forget about the nurse , ok?
# 2 you DEFINITELY need to talk to your doctor , liver bipsy is a SERIOUS thing.
# 3 positive ANA in the setting of a suspected liver disease means you MAY have Auto-Immune Hepatitis, thats why you need to be seen by a GASTROENTEROLOGIST & not just any doctor.
good luck

I had some liver issues and I needed liver enzyme tests.

Liver enzymes are released when the liver is damaged due to injury or illness. The cells are crushed or damaged and they release enzymes that go into your blood and can be tested to see if there's any problems with your liver.

Not that they tell your doctor exactly what's wrong--they're just a general sign that you have liver damage. I had damage from taking certain medicines. The biopsy (removal and analysis of a little piece of liver) will help the doctor determine what's causing the damage and possibly the extent of the damage.

ANA or antinuclear antibody test is usually used as one of the tests for autoimmune disease like lupus, etc. They usually report that as titers for example 1:4, 1:300, etc. Don't really know what you are feeling or how is you medical condition is presenting itself but at the top of my mind, your dorcotr is possibly thinking of autoimmune hepatitis or some condition that is autoimmune.
