As long as you use padding to protect the screen. You can lay the TV flat. Usually, this is the only way to remove the TV stand anyhow.
If it is in the box, lay it flat on its back side and don't put anything on top.

I've laid my LCD TV flat a number of times, it is now over a year old and has not had any problems. I think it is only plasma that can't be laid flat.
