When calories are listed on the back of a package of food, they actually are talking about kcal. When you capitalize 'cal' and write it as 'Cal', you're talking about kcal. So when you're told that you need to eat 2000 Cal a day, that's the same as saying you need to eat 2000 kcal or 2000 thousand calories. Confusing, I know. But think of it as little calories (which no one except scientists talk about) and big Calories (which is what food is measured in, and are one thousand time as much as the other).

What we call "calories" in dietary terms, actually is Kilocalories...or kcals

No conversion is necessary.....

Kcals is actually usually only used in scientific applications, and is why we don't often hear the term.

Sometimes, in medical or biological applications, the term Kcals is used, but when you are trying to put it in terms of nutrition, it is mere calories.....

The scientific definition of a "calorie" is the energy to raise one litre of water one degree in temperature on the centigrade scale. This does not allow for any heat loss, and is only possible as a "thought" experiment.....thus it is a nearly immeasurably small amount of energy. Kilocalories are much easier to work with, and usually any real experiments are done on this scale.

100K will be 100 * 1000

But, when Calories are concerned, (notice the capitalization) it is actually KILO calories. Most of the food calories are expressed in this format. These days, it has become sloppy that C is not always capitalized.

ONE calory is a very small amount of energy. So when you hear your food is 100 calories or Calories, think 1000 times that in that term.

BUT, if you are using the term "calories" in the food industry term, 100k cal is 100 Calories.

a "calorie" is a kilocalorie. they just shortened it to 1 calorie. so, it's 100.
