If you've been together less than six months, then I'd say stick with generics, like candy (guys love it, too!). Or maybe try something small (as in, under $20) that relates to his interests. Say, sports or video games? If there's something specific he's asked for, go with that, obviously, but that's probably not the case. So I'd say those ideas are things you can do to be safe and show you care. But don't go overboard, or he'll probably feel uncomfortable and smothered. Good luck!
