It's short for "fundamentalist".

The adjective applies to people who believe their pet ideology (in recent times, mostly religions) is the basis of everything and should get favor treatment over everything else.

Fundie muslims are usually called islamists and are the ones who believe that shari'a should be written into the law of the land, thieves have their hands lopped off, sexual deviants (basically anybody who does anything else than one man-one woman, and only if you're already married) should be stoned, and governments run by non muslims, and that don't scrape and whimper to appease islam are fair game for terrorist attacks, if not outright war.

Christian fundies are mostly protestants, and usually belong to the puritan or evangelical branches. They believe that sex out of marriage, or for any other purpose than reproduction, is bad, homosexuality should be a crime, and anything contradicting the most literal interpretation of the bible must be wrong and those saying such things must be made to shut up. They are the people who try to get constitutional amendments against gay rights, and to make creationism/intelligent design taught in school instead of evolution, no matter that if rational science hadn't won, we'd never have discovered America, much less gone to the moon, and they would never enjoy their favorite televangelist on cable/satellite TV.

Catholic fundies are those who believe mass should be said in Latin and the pope should be heeded by heads of state.

About the Jews, I am not sure. I guess the ultra orthodox ones who insist on following all the mitsvot, dress in uniform all black with hat AND kippa and with a prayer shawl under their jacket at all times, and are obsessed with making things right for the Mashiach to come could be regarded as fundies... but I suppose the real ones are those who live in Israel and into the ultra religious parties that want to get Jewish law (like the prohibition of pork and other taboo foods, or forbidding any work on sabbath) into the law of the land, no matter that many Israelis are not that religious and want to be left alone with how to lead their lives.

Fundie or fundy (plural fundies) is a pejorative slang term used in the United States to refer to Fundamentalist Christians. The term is intentionally derogatory, and is used most commonly by those opposed to the Religious Right movement. The term is often associated with religiously motivated conservative moral beliefs, especially those regarding sexuality

I agree with the others, that it's short for fundamentalist, but one common misconception is that only Christians or believers on God(s) can be fundamentalists. I have met many fundy atheists in my day. A fundamentalist is a person who believes what they believe "just because" on a "leap of faith" without being willing to question, discuss, or defend their position. A fundy Christian would use the motto "the bible says it, I believe it, and that settles it!" (i.e. young earth creationists, etc). A good example of a modern day fundy atheist is Sam Harris, author of "Letter to a Christian Nation."

A fundamentalist. A fundamentalist is a person who holds a core set of beliefs from which they will not waver, despite any evidence from history, science, or any other source of knowledge. Because the fundamentalist doubts the power of human reason over their tenets, they believe God is not reasoning, either, and that good is defined by what he does. Ex, all scripture is literally true.

A harmonist, to contrast, is a person who believes that God embodies all reason, and that his reason is also good and perfect. Ex, all scripture is true, but it must be taken in context- a parable must not be read as a literal account.

A rationalist would reject all things that, on the surface, do not appear to comply with their understanding of the universe. Ex, The Jefferson Bible, where Thomas Jefferson cut out every line of the bible that he did not believe followed science.

Fundie = Fundamentalist. Fundamentalism is defined as a movement in 20th century Protestantism emphasizing the literally interpreted Bible as fundamental to Christian life and teaching and a movement or attitude stressing strict and literal adherence to a set of basic principles .

Fundamentalists are typically those religious people who take a very literal, rigid interpretation of their religion's teachings and documents.

"Fundamentalist".

Fundamentalist" is a term used to distinguish between different attitudes to sacred texts. Fundamentalist Christians believe that the Bible is inerrant, historically and scientifically accurate, and the "Word of God" - although what the latter expression means, precisely, can be hard to pin down. Non fundamentalists hold that the Bible can be subjected to the tests and critical processes that can be used for any other text. The conclusion of most non fundamentalist Christians is that Biblical texts express the religious beliefs and world view of their authors, and should be read within that context.

a "fundie" is a derogatory term atheists use to refer to christians who stand by their beliefs. You could also use the term to catagorize fundamental atheism, as they can be quite dogmatic in their beliefs. I stress the word beliefs, BTW, because that is what they are.

People who want to get back to the "roots" of their religion.
Forsome reason a lot of fundies tend to take it overboard though, therefore becoming radical.
