Improvised Explosive Device.
In English, it's a home-made bomb that's cobbled together in various ways.
There is no standard configuration for an IED and just about anything can be used to conceal it or as its explosive compoment. Old artillery shells, old rockets, mines, some plastic explosives, a natural gas truck, anything.
And the same goes for their activation. They go from something as simple as a rip cord like a suicide vest to an elaborate remote controlled system relying on cell phones, command lines or victim-activated switches.
And they are the single greatest threats to our people out there, since they can be anything, hidden anywhere and detonated at any time. Only good observation and some pretty advanced technology can protect us from them. And even then it's not perfect.
