Is it not true also, that a lot of them would not pass a backround check ?

It isn't the only way. There are legal proceedures to follow to become a citizen. I have friends from both Poland and Mexico who have done it. It takes time, but it's the way it is done. Cheating only makes you a cheater. And illegal. Illegal=bad. Do it the right way....and show some respect for every immigrant who has done it the right way before!

Before I begin I would like you to know that I am an American born and raised here and proud to be one. I am all for shipping back all the ilegals that commit crimes. The ones who come here to work and make a life for themselves I would like to help. After all that is what America is about helping those less fortunate. I think that sentiment has been lost by many.

First of to clarify. Ilegals are not getting all the handouts from government agencies. In most states they can't even get a driver's license. For that matter there are many Americans that should stop having a baby every 9 months and get a job instead of welfare.

When an individual applies in their home country for a visa to come to the U.S. they have to provide financial proof to the Unites States Embassy that they can afford to purchase the plane ticket, pay for a hotel room and other expenses, etc. They do not apply for a green card in their country, unless they married a U.S. National, in that case the U.S. National would petition for their spouse and show proof that they can support their spouse. Most individuals that do qualify for a visa are very wealthy and only come here to vacation. They don't come here to live. They own business and travel all over the world. Trust me I know quite a few. They would never leave their country to come here! The same as I would never ever in a million years leave this country to live any where else.

The individuals who cross any border ilegally do so because they have no other choice. The journey is long and perilous. Many times they are robbed of the little money they have, women are raped, they become injured or ill. It's not an easy choice, but when you are starving, living in a shack made of plywood and card board boxes risking any thing to come and work here is worth it.

Put yourself in their place. It's hard because even the poorest people here in America live better that most in a third world country.

Reading many comments here and elsewhere on the subject I get the impression that too many people are blind to the fact that there IS a saturation point, we can only handle SO MANY emigrees - legal or not.
I would ask: Do you believe the USA should welcome ALL the unfortunate, unbderprivileged people of the world 'only seeking a better life for themselves and their families'?
Even if it were true that (so many of) those outlaws are victims of an unfair fate and are here mainly doing jobs citizens 'won't do' it doesn't change the possibility - no - probability that we face economic chaos if the trend continues unabated.
I have no beef with individuals but blame the greed of employers who got us to this sorry plight.

Before the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, it was nearly impossible for anyone except caucasian Europeans to get legal immigration into the US.

One of the tenets of the laws passed to stop discrimination also opened up legal immigration to people of color. People from Mexico, India, China, and the Phillippines flocked to the US.

Then, restrictions began to set in; only those immigrants of color with needed skills were invited on special visas for six years and allowed to segue into getting green cards and establishing legal residency.

But trying to stem the tides of immigrants was more difficult than that. People kept coming, legal or not. Big corporations in food service, construction, agribusiness, hotels, even airport cleaning services got addicted to cheap, illegally imported labor for several reasons:

1. No work rules. Poor work conditions allowed on worksites.

2. Flexibility. No requirements for hours worked or additional expense.

3. Low turnover. People desperate for work accept anything for a long time.

4. Low cost. Healthcare, social security and other social costs avoided completely.

5. No penalty. No corporate heads get serious jailtime, very few fines, no illegals go to jail as felonies, amnesty gets declared and people go from illegal to legal at no cost to employers, who just get fresh recruits from abroad.

Slavery was supposedly ended in 1865. US employers have always been in denial of this, first importing Chinese workers for the railroads, then in creating wave after wave of people deliberately mistreated to bolster the bottom line.

The only way to end this is for the illegality to be made painful for the employers. Since only a third of the people entering the US illegally are employed in this fashion (the rest are dependents or criminals) there is a lot to be gained by ending illegal immigration and expanding legal immigration.

In general the reason people come illegal is that they would not pass a background check because they have some sort of criminal record in there country or do not have legal documentation in their own country so its a waste of time for them to try to come legally because there request would be denied. Because if they were honest and legal in their country and hard working with no criminal record its very easy to get a Tourist Visa for US.

For so long it was the easiest way. Think about it. If you do it the legal way :

* you have been a legal permanent resident for five years, or three years if you are married to a U.S. citizen
* you have lived in the U.S. for at least 2-1/2 years (50%) of the five year period, or 1-1/2 years (50%) if you are married to a citizen
* you have lived for more than three months in the state where you apply for citizenship
* you are 18 years or older
* you have good moral character

Why go through all that when you can sneak over here and get a job and not have to pay taxes, get welfare and food stamps and help on housing?

It takes too long and costs too much to do it the legal way pretty much. The ones who do it illegally are usually too poor to even afford food. There is no way they can wait the time it takes (which can be over 10 years at times and sometimes has been as long as 17 years). Their children are starving now.

And even if they could wait that long, they could never afford it. If you can't even raise enough money to feed your kid, how in the world are you going to raise the money to come here (which has at times cost people upwards of 4,000 dollars or more). They cannot do it legally, the obstacles are too large to overcome. So they do it the only way they can, which is illegally.

Easy to research, apply to any US embassy as a foreign citizen and see precisely how you are discriminated against. Everyone but the rich and powerful and people w. the potential to become rich and powerful find this while filling out the first few forms and paying hundreds/thousands to have them processed.

because not only are we ( goverment ) allowing it to happen, illegals are getting handouts right and left.

the USA has given illegals a greater incentive to do it and the enforcement has been so relaxed there is little fear of any punishment.

because poorer people are given a harder time to get papers
and most cant wait 3 years for the paperwork to get done, so they just get here any way they can as quick as they can
people that have money can get things done quicker and are not in a big hurry
many, many, many people do it the right way, but they only discuss the ones that dont as the problem, we have just as many
legal aliens here as illegal,
