Because unconsciously.. they want to believe in something they just don't know what. All man kind was created to have fellowship with their Creator so when that doesn't happen.. it leaves much much room for speculations, assumptions, and leaves man to himself and his evil deeds.

Why do people who do believe in god - and therefore should be relying on faith - constantly pretend to have proof or evidence that he exists?

I don't know about anyone else, but if the believers would admit that they have no evidence for god's existence, I'd have no beef with their claims. If the believers were to really accept that "the foundation of Christianity is faith", they'd certainly be a lot better behaved, and we wouldn't have the mess we have here in R&S.

But look around you - how many of these believers are satisfied with faith? Practically none of them. With rare exceptions (to whom I tip my hat...), most of the believers here insist that they have some kind of evidence for their beliefs, and therefore that it's foolish for the rest of us to not believe. That's not just dishonest, it's also outright denial of the role of faith in belief. It dishonors their religion at the same time that it results in rude behavior towards the rest of us.

Not the Christian god particularly... ANY god. The concept of a god should be proven or else not everyone will believe.

But you're right... theism has that foundation of "faith" to make people believe without evidence/proof.

Think for yourself question authority. Don't just assume the religious, educational, and political powers that be know the ultimate truth. We're all human and all innately fallible. To trust human nature with matters of the supernatural is just plain silly,
and to base a hole belief system on faith not fact is insane.

The scriptures have also proven themselves historically unreliable. We know absolutely nothing of Jesus' early life except for his birth and what has been written in uncanonized texts, and in said texts, Jesus was said to have murdered a member of his family.

I have faith in my humanity and the humanity of others. Faith is an integral part of existence. Without faith our paper money would be worthless. The lack of empirical evidence and the total lack of intervention by god creates a deep sense of skepticism that to me warrants concern.

Christianity through time has proven to be just as detrimental to culture as disease. Native Americans lost much of their cultural identity due to religious meddling. If you look at almost every major culture in history you will find that Christianity has wormed its way in(usually through force), forced it's cultural identity upon them, enslaved them, and used its fire and brimstone imagery to control said population.

Religion is a means of control and if you don't believe that look at the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections. Faith based voting got us into Iraq and faith based voting stranded us there.

The problem is that you keep saying that god exists, all we are asking for is proof. If you say that you have faith in god and base it strictly on faith and quit saying that god does exist we would never have any discussion on the matter. We are not dissing your level of faith. We are dissing your saying that something that cannot be proven exists.

well i'm agnostic all i want is proof and evidence other then saying the bible says so or take a good look around you at the world we live in anyway every religion that believes in a higher being says that they're religion and god is right well to me this higher being is unknowable anyway i say to all believers but not in a nasty or sarcastic way to prove the existence of your higher being just like i tell atheists as well to disprove the existence of a higher being as you can see i'm an open minded and fair individual

Faith, why not believe in something else then, like an invisible pink unicorn or the flying spaghetti monster - you could have faith in them, couldnt you?

I find it terrible that you don't believe in Odin, Thor, Baldr, Loki and the Fenris wolf which will one day devour the sun! What? You don't believe me? You shouldn't need PROOF - its about faith.

Anyway I doubt you'll ever see an atheist ask for proof god exists. We know he doesnt.

Truth is true weather one believes it or not. Truth does not require belief in order to be true, but it deserves to be believed.

Christianity properly understood is an antidote, not a lifestyle choice or part of well-balanced religious view. Like the antidote, it can be painful and and inconvenient. It can be socially unacceptable. But the most of all it can be offensive.

There are abundance of of evidence for the reliability of Scripture, for the authority of the Bible as the inspired Word of God, and that the Bible accurately portrays the historical events it covers, including the earthly life of Jesus Christ.

Proof, of course is not substitute for faith, which is essential for our salvation and for our communion with God. You actually have to have much more faith to be an atheist than believe that there is God.

As we know, the intellectual obstacles are usually just an excuse for non-believers, but when we remove the substance of of their excuse, they are left naked to confront their real obstacles, their real demons.

Humans always need tangible proof. Only the Holy Spirit is going to create the faith in their hearts to believe after they have heard the Word.

Because why would an intelligent god, Try to make us believe with faith alone.. No signs. Us non believers ask so that we can try an prove you wrong. I don't think christians understand just how impossible the theory of god is.

1 book to prove his existance
1000's of books that dissaprove it..

How do we know it isn't a superstition unless we question the assumptions? There are many religions that all believe, all but one are wrong, but all that have faithful. Maybe a lot of people are believing in things that just aren't so cause they use faith as a form of blindness.
