Not a pet store! Try a shelter first, if none there, you could always check petfinder.com Here are some:

Try Petfinder.com.

You can search by zipcode and even breed. It is a great resource for bringing together folks that want a new dog and folks that have rescued a dog from being killed/euthanized. What ever you do...do not use a pet store. They utilize back yard breeders and puppy mills. These circumstances are terrible for the dogs that are stuck there pumping out litter after litter of puppies in unhealthy, disgusting conditions.

If your instinst on a full blooded pedigreed dog, then use a repritable breeder. Contact your vet (or if you don't have one, then one in your area) and ask if they know of/recommend any breeders for the dog that you are looking for. They will know the ones that take care of their puppies and their breeding adults. If you don't use a good breeder, your puppy may have issues that weren't identified or you may even pay for a dog that isn't what you paid for.

I was in a local pet shop the other day and they had Yorkie/silky terrier mix puppies and Silky terrier AKC registered puppies. After talking to them for a while they actually admitted the puppies were from the same litter...they were charging pedigree price (and claiming pedigreed status) on the silky terriers...but that is unethical and against AKC standards if the litter is not all from the same father...let alone 2 different breeds of fathers. So don't go into this blind just thinking about how cute the dog is.

I do have a pedigreed Yorkie and 2 mixed breed mutts...so I've been through both ends of the spectrum. Just be careful and make sure you have the health of the parents and puppies in mind.

For cheap? Good luck. Try looking at Humane Societies or animal control. Maybe a Yorkie/Maltese rescue. Most breeders are charging about $1800 for a Yorkie or Maltese, and pet stores are never a good place to buy your pet because they're stocked with the "damaged" pups that breeders and mills couldn't sell.

In Toronto we have this Fee's Waived at animal shelters when they r over-indated with cat's & dog's. If you don't have such thing
going through the newspaper is a start, and alphebetised, or ask
around, but rescuing a puppy from the Humane Society is definately a rewarding experience to mankind. However, be carefull of "puppy-mills" where they mistreat animals, they're out
in the suburbs not to be seen. I didn't pick my Jack Russell, He picked me! You also find that out on your quest.

maybe you should go check out on the news papers ads see any body who closer by where you live at is giving free or low price $ . and if you do see anything alike that on some body ads that are selling or giving away free yorkshire terriers or maltieses pupppies then try to call the owner and ask him or her about the puppies they got and se if they can have you come by to the place and then you can go see and pick one that you might like to take back home with you. or you can also check online for puppies sales or you can try check out at the mall where they have pet shop.
