i have a jack russell who is normally active but for the past few weeks hes been very naughty. i came home last night from work and my house was completely destroyed, he takes everything off my shelves climbes on the kitchen counter tears out the garbage and even ripped the wallpaper off the wall, eats my shoes. ive had him since he was new born and i suppose it is my fault for spoiling him so much cause i treat him as if he were my child sad to say. this isnt like him. we usually take him along when we leave and he loves to go bye bye but sometimes we just cant take him. has anyone else ever experienced this problem and if so do you have any helpful hints......other than sending him on his merry way!

How old is your dog? If around 10-18 months, Congratulations! Your dog has entered his teenage years and will be acting like a teenager. He may forget all of his commands, and become very full of him or herself. There are several books on raising teenage dogs.

Regardless, it sounds like your dog is BORED. JRTs are very smart, very active dogs that require ALOT of stimulation and work! They need to be excercised 2 times a day, not a walk around the block, but running, chasing, fetch, agility, flyball, dock-dogs, earth-dogs.

Dogs need jobs. If we don't tell them what the job is, they make one or more up. It sounds like your's decided to become an interior decorator.

They need to get tired out!!! A tired JRT is a happy JRT.

Take him to doggie day care at least 3 times a week. Go back to obedience class and train with him DAILY. Poop him out!

They are nick-named "Jack Russell Terrorists" for a reason.

They are wonderful dogs that can do amazing things! But they need alot of work.

I really hope that you have plenty of toys for your little boy to play with and even some rawhide chews for him to chew on and if you don't for some reason that could be why he is being such a naughty little boy. Just make sure that you put your shoes away in the closet and keep the closet door firmly closed so that he can't get in there and rip up mommy's shoes. I understand how it can be hard for your 4-legged child not to want you to leave him but he should know by now that you always come home to him again. I don't know what to tell you about the climbing, have you thought about leaving the television on so as to provide him with company? The sound of the tv may make him feel better.

Buy him a crate, and get him used to being in it with his favorite toys and maybe a snack at least once a day while you are at home. Start with a few minutes only, and slowly increase the time he stays in the crate each time.

Crating may seem cruel but it actually is being very kind to dogs who must stay alone. Dogs are very social animals, and you are his pack. The reason he is acting out when you leave him is that he is stressed and afraid when he is alone. Dogs also have a natural instinct to "den up," (wild pups stay quiet in the den while their parents are out hunting), and his crate will come to feel to him like his safe den, so he will be less panicked when you leave him, and you home will be safe and sound when you return.

Please watch the show called "The Dog Whisperer".He is truely amazing & has a training video also.Your dog is bored. Give him plenty of excersize & give him his own toys &ball & chewies. When he does bad,,tell him firmly,,NO~Bad!! Then give him his toys & play with him a bit. You may want to concider dog proofing a room for him while you are away.Or a fenced in yard with a doghouse & straw. If you use a chain,,be sure it is a strong chain from a hardware store with a swivel clip @ each end & have it where he cannot tangle on anything or hang on anything while you are away.Your dog may be frustrated because he doesnt have a set schedual,,like outside time,,play time,,sleep time.He needs something to look forward to like special time with you.

You may not want to do this, but... if you have enough money, it's good to get another dog to keep him company. I used to have a dog who would do the same exact thing, like one time, we went home and he hand totally torn apart the garbage and gone crazy, and he kept chewing up shoes, and one time, he hid a box of chocolates (we never found them) but anyways, when we got another dog, he stopped being all destructive and evil. They played together and it helped him use his energy in a good way, instead of tearing our house down from the inside out.

and if he hasn't been neutred, that may help, but i'm not sure.

Wow he sounds like he's got a thing about pay backs.I would put him in a carrier and leave him there when he's bad. Also put him in there when you leave the house. If he can climb up on stuff watch out.He can climb up and turn on the stove or knock something down and cause a fire...I never traveled with my girl ,I always heard that you could run over them if not careful...Oh well I hope this helps...

Yes I have a Bassett Hound and she is great unless you leave her alone in the house to roam free. He is showing you he doesn't like to be left alone. Get a kennel to keep him in for small time periods. Designate a room that you can shut off from the rest of the house when you are gone for long periods of time. Good Luck

Start putting him in a dog crate during the day. Dogs are den animals. If he is feeling scared or lonely then the crate will keep him feeling safe. He will bark and howl like crazy for the first few day, but he will get over it. Good luck. I have been in your shoes, you can get through this.

Sorry about this but it is the nature of the breed, now known as the Parson Russell terrier per the AKC.
