My dog did the same thing, we put tobasco sauce on the cat poop so they would not eat it any more and I think she basically grew out of it.

unfortunately yes, my dog did the same thing. The only way that I found to deal with this problem was to put my cats hooded litter pan sideways in a large closet that has a louver door on it that I can keep half closed so that the dog cannot gain access to it. Hope this helps, nothing else that I ever tried worked. the other alternative (worked in my old house), I had a cat door installed in my spare room door so that my cats could get into the room but my dog could not, of course it worked for me but my dog is about 60lbs. If you have a small size dog, this idea probably would not work for you. PS-I tried relocating the box to the basement, however, one of my cats (I have 2) is afraid of the basement and refused to go down. Good Luck.

MIne do it all the time and it's so bad because of the litter...I have tried everything and the only success was a baby gate keeping them away from the box...it's nothing about nutrition, I honestly think that, based on the fact that the dogs eat the cat food, it's a "in one end out the other" thing...

Cats' digestive systems aren't as effective as dogs', so their food has to have more nutrients in it to start with, plus there are a lot of nutrients still left in the waste that the cat was not able to extract. So, to us it may be gross, but to the dog, it's just more food! We finally had to build a platform for the litterbox that the cat could jump on, but that the dog could not get to, in order to keep the dog out of the litter box. Otherwise, it's like leaving steak lying around and expecting your dog not to eat it....

Dogs always do that. It's so gross! That's why I have the cat litter box in a room with a baby gate across the door way.

When they do that, often they are looking for more nutrition. Try getting a healtier food and putting the cat box in a room, keeping the door closed with a cat door so the dog can't get through.

That is called doggie tootsierolls. A nickname I have heard from dog breeders. They also love the offerings from horses and cows and other things. I think it is just what they do because I have never met a dog yet that does not do that. I guess there is a medical term for people or a animals that eat unusual things...it is pica...have a great day...Mmm

Yes, my two dogs do the same thing. We keep our litter box in the laundry room and then keep the door closed to keep our dogs away from it.
