Son aged 6 - having a Lumbar Puncture.

He's being sedated - will that take the pain away ?

Can i stay with him ? He's terrified about being left alone.

It really depends on the doctor if he will allow you to be there with him. Some doctors don't want parents to be in there just in case they freak out. I would speak directly with your doctor.
If he is sedated he shouldn't feel anything, especially since it is easy to sedate a young child.

I do not think that you will want to see someone stick a long and large needle in between the spaces of your son's lumbar spine. He will be sedated so that he will not move and jerk when the needle is inserted. He may or may no feel it especially when he wakes up (there may be discomfort) but he will be asked to lie flat on his bed for a couple of hours and not be allowed to raise his head and get up (might get a nasty headache). Being a doctor, I would probably allow you to be with your son until he is fully sedated or asleep then ask you to step outside of the room. Please ask you doctor if he or she will allow this. Also, check where this procedure will be done (in the hospital room or maybe operating room) and hospital policy regarding having relatives around during a procedure.

If your son is being sedated, he will feel nothing. You can always ask the doctor if you can stay with your son, but the doctor may not want you in the room during the procedure. This is just a precaution on their part as you may become too anxious and distract the doctor/nurses from what they are doing. Tell your son that you will be with him when he wakes up and not to worry.

I hope all goes well for you both.

better than probable he will be laying on his facet jointly with his knees pulled up. I actual have had a number of of them. it truly is scary and regardless of if sedated it does damage. He should be nonetheless. My moms and dads were outdoors of the room and that i had a nurse to convenience me. not many moms and dads can take a needle going into the again of their baby. Please tell him to be courageous. i replaced into 13 at the same time as this got here about, I had meningitis. It would not take too lengthy yet he has to save thoroughly nonetheless. Afterwards has to position on his again for a at the same time as. He should be sturdy. i recognize that i in my opinion obdurate plenty. Having you in there can make him cry extra and attain out, which he won't be able to do. Reassure him that it will be ok and to stay sturdy. I desire him and also you the better of success. I don't see any reason you couldn't stay with him - tell the doctor you insist. Sedating him is a measure to ensure he doesn't move during the procedure. He will probably have some discomfort afterwards, but they should medicate him accordingly.
