Traditionally, Southerners have been poorer than Northerners, so they have looked to the church for assurance. People who have lots of money, or who are interested in making lots of money tend to ignore church. They do not see it as a profit way to spend time. the poorer Southerners, however, do understand that we all must spend time with God and his word, and that the real wealth in this world is winning souls for Christ and helping our fellow man. The only thing that you can take to heaven is people---all things must stay. So, there is really no point to amassing great wealth on earth and ignoring the things of God. this is why Jesus said that it is very hard for a rich man to get into heaven. the rich are concerned almost exclusively with themselves. This is pride, which is sin and sin cannot enter heaven.

Guilt from starting and losing an unrighteous war. That and having spent a better part of two centuries making believe it didn't happen. I suppose it wears on a person's soul and they feel they can buy their way into heaven. Giving to charities is not a Southern thing though. We Northerners give to charities that may actually benefit people who need it, not to see that our favorite pastor drives a new Lincoln every year.

well if you've ever been down south you will notice right off the back that there scenery is much nicer then up north anyway in their minds they feel that they are in god's country which to them is down south so they have more faith in a higher being existing and therefore they tend to be more religious so i'm gonna say it has to do with environment as well as state of mind

We have less education down here, less money/wealth, less access to other avenues of entertainment and socialization (especially in rural areas), and more religious people living down here.
