If you live north of 38' latitude (central CA for example) you cannot possibly get enough vitamin D by being outside even all day in the winter. The sun's angle is just too low. It is very important to take a vitamin D supplement in the winter. Taking 1,000mg is a safe dose, it can be toxic for the liver to have a very large dose at one time introduced into the body. During the summer, it is possible for the body to make 10,000mg a day, but it's over the course of the entire day. Not swallowed at one time. Take 1,000mg consistenly each day and you will feel better emotionally, won't feel the winter blues, be less fatigued, drink less coffee, have fewer cramps and pains in your legs and feet. Your body and immune system will also be much healthier. It really is that amazing, and why isn't this information widely publicized? Simply because vitaminD is pretty simple, straightforward stuff: there isn't a lot of money to be made from selling it, it's non-prescription, and cheap.

No, 1,000 IU isn't too much, but you probably don't need that much unless you're embarking on a diet/exercise/fitness program. Just be careful. Too much of anything can be very bad (too much Vitamin A can kill you, for example) so a good general rule of thumb is see how it ranks against the U.S. recommended daily allowances (RDA). If it's more than 200% of the U.S. RDA, check with your doctor before taking it.

Where are you getting it from?

The skin makes vitamin D for us while we're in the sun. It's hard to measure, but it's very rare for someone to get a deficiency unless they never go outside. Getting more isn't so bad, our ancestors used to spend all day in the sun and had twice as much vitamin D in their system as we do now with no problems.
