Freestanding birth centers are typically run by a group of midwives. You usually go to the actual birth center for your prenatal care.
If you are having a homebirth with a midwife, you may have prenatal appointments in an office, at the midwife's home or in your own home.
ETA:
angie_laffin927 - Actually, you've obviously never read any studies on midwifery care or homebirth. The maternal and infant outcomes are typically BETTER than in hospital/OB attended births. And countries where midwifery care is the NORM have better neonatal mortality rates than here in the USA.

I just had a homebirth December 20, 2006 with a certified nurse midwife. I went to her home/office once a month, twice a month and then weekly for check-ups as the pregnancy progressed. She offered every test that a doctor would do. I had an ultrasound and several different blood screens that I thought were useful. Homebirth is VERY safe as long as one has a 'normal' low risk pregnancy....it is actually safer for mother and baby than birthing in a hospital. Hope this info helps.

It depends on the midwife. If she has an office at the birthing center, then you'll probably go there for checkups. I never used a midwife, but at the doctor's offices that I went to, there were always midwifes on staff. My cousin used one for a home birth, but there were complications that forced her to the hospital. Her midwife had privileges at the hospital, though, so she was still comfortable with who delivered her baby.

Possibilities:
1 Your midwife. Probably one affiliated with the birthing centre.
2 Any obstetrician. Here, most don't need referrals.
3 Your GP. Most family doctors can handle basic pre-natal care.

Ok people-she is not asking your opinion on what you think of birthing centers. She wants to know where to get check ups. Usually your midwife will do them. Good Luck To You
To the person above who called her stupid-obviously your not the brightest crayon in the box

It would not matter where you give birth, you need regular checkups regardless. I can think of several dangerous conditions right off the bat that need medical supervision.
