The answer is a definite no. When I got Sky HD I took the + box to my bedroom with a free view card and if I try to record or even watch a film pre-recorded it stops me, telling me to up-grade..

No they disable it, you cant even set reminders or anything like that! my dad did the same thing, and no cant do anything like Sky+ with the box just watch TV!
