Nutrasweet is still alive and well at our grocery stores and in diet drinks. However, it was unhealthy. There were some instances of plane pilots having epileptic episodes in the cockpit after drinking diet drinks. Some people suspect -- whether true or not -- that Gulf War Syndrome was caused by leaving cases of Nutrasweet-laden drinks in the heat of the desert. While that may or may not be true, it is true that Nutrasweet breaks down in your blood stream into wood alcohol and formaldehyde.

When I was suffering from fibromyalgia, I discovered I felt much worse when drinking Nutrasweet. I actually switched from that back to regular sugared drinks (which are also bad for you) and lost weight. (The average person who kicks diet drinks loses 19 lbs. in one year.) Anyway, one time my wife accidentally picked up Diet Mountain Dew (with Nutrasweet) because the label looked like the real thing. After 2 glasses of that, I had to use a cane to get around for the next week. (Obviously my body was more sensitive to it than most.)

Splenda is healthier, though large quantities of that can cause diarrhea. So I think Nutrasweet's day (aspartame) is probably over.

By the way, Equal IS Nutrasweet -- they are both aspartame.

Nutra Sweet is still around. I think it is the only "fake" sweetener that you can cook with.
