There could be good or bad motives inspiring them. There could be innocent curiosity or innate yearning for truth.
Since atheists are all different kinds of people, there could be a variety of answers.

Seek and you will find. Whether we acknowledge it or not there is a deep knowing within each of us that there is more to existence than the eye can see or the mind understand. We have different personalities and backgrounds but compliment each other nevertheless. When my faith is challenged I gain better clarity about my beliefs. I focus on the chicken or egg quandary cause it nulls most theories including evolution. Something came first whichever way you look at it and I don't think it matters how so much came to be after that. Logic always points to a point of creation and that's all I need know. Ask away coz I am all for it.

that actually is a very easy one to answer. Everyone was and is created by God, who places in each of us an emptiness that can only be filled by Him. If an atheist really deep down in their heart believed there was no God, then they would not have to ask about Him.

Which God? I don't see many atheists asking about Odin or Zeus or Osiris. Do you mean Yahweh?
Either way, regardless of which deity, it's usually because they're trying to get believers to recognize the illogic of some aspect of their various faiths.

I do it to make them think about their beliefs, and possibly to get them to do a little research on them.
Since I'm an atheist, they of course will never believe anything that I tell them. So instead, I try to get them to find the answers for themselves.
It's a trick I learned from my high school chemistry teacher, who I believe learned it from Plato. :)

Human beings are created to know God. He instilled in us a thirst that will not be satisfied until we reach out to Him for companionship and love

In order to show and point out the hypocrisy and inconsistancy in the god mythologies. To illustrate that a belief in god(s) is incompatible with reasoned, rational thought.
