Rent, The Lionking, Riverdance (Not sure if that's a musical, but it's still so good!)

Mine would have to be..." My Fair Lady' nobody can hold a candle to the performance and innocence of Audrey Hepburn.
Even though her signing parts were dubbed over there is not a more timely piece and ageless as " My Fair Lady" also " West Side Story" just for the stunning visual that it was and the songs are some of the best ever done for the screen....ok I'm going on but I'm also a rent head...I've seen the stage play over 120 times... THE movie sucks...Rob Marshall was originaly supposed to take on the project but he talked the studios into letting him do "Chicago" instead.. he had a deeper passion for that project...What does Chris Columbus know about musicals? Imagine how great the film RENT would have been if Rob Marshall had taken on the project....so bad for Jonathan Larson'
Ok and the stage production of "Jesus Christ Superstar" oh well TMI! lol!!!!

"Into the Woods." I recommend the PBS recording of the Broadway version, from the early 90's. 2 words:
Bernadette Peters.
It's all the Fairy Tale characters in the same "Fairy Tale" location of "Once Upon a Time," but after the "Happily Ever After" things get weird in Act II. Fairy Tales (folk lore) illuminate the colletive human psyche, and this fascinating yet familiar set of stories is used to reiterate the traditional themes, but also to illuminate the newer dark places in the collective psyche of the contemporary world.
Cinderella, Rapunzel, the Witch, 2 charming princes, Jack, Little Red and the Wolf... come on! And the music is outstanding.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
After that, Reefer Madness.
Man, I love both of those so much!! The first has great punk music, a transgender main character, and a touching, amazing storyline. The second is so funny you'll be rolling in your seats, plus the music absolutely gets stuck in your head. And they both have film versions, so I can cherish them at home.
If I had to choose a 'serious' musical, Les Miserables. Brilliant story, gorgeous music.

The Sound of Music is a great musical. The songs are great and it is actually based on a true story.

Phantom, Hairspray, Joseph, Lil' Abner, Calamity Jane, & Grease. I've never seen Phantom, Lil' Abner, or Grease performed, but we put on Grease for our school's musical last year.
I haven't seen Wicked yet, but I'm going next week and I've heard it's excellent. I haven't seen A Chorus Line either, but I'm going to that in March.
I'm such a nerd.....I love broadway shows!
