In the first half of the last century it was a word commonly used in everyday conversation, poetry and song. It was a one word description of appearing to be happy and cheerful.

I read that it originated in prison slang and then spread
into general usage.

I think it started as recent as the sixties or 70's when more homosexuals started to come out of the closet and they just used thst word to describe them/

I believe Oscar Wilde was the first to use the word Gay to mean homosexual.

because gay means happy-and that is exactly what I see when I watch the FAB 5 for example!
