I'll be in Detroit, MI actually but will make the trip to Ontario. What should I check out in Canada? Is Niagra Falls close enough to see? How much does it cost?

It does not cost anything to see the Falls, they are on public property. But you have to get there. It is not really feasible to do it as a day trip from Detroit; you would want to overnight there. For those of us who have been there many, many times yes it is ho hum and yes the area near the Falls is touristy. But if you have never seen it then yes you should and it is very impressive. According to Kodak it is the most photographed natural site in the world. If you are visiting outside of the summer hotel rates are very reasonable, during summer not so. Also, if you want to see another city and make a multi-day visit out of it, Toronto is only a couple of hours away.
If all this is not on for you, and you want to know what to see on the Canadian side of the border from Detroit as a day trip then a couple of suggestions for you if you are at all a history buff:
The Essex County Steam and Gas Engine Museum
Fort Malden
A lot of stuff relating to history of the oil industry in Ontario (yes we had one, same time as Pennsylvania) in Oil Spring and Petrolia
Very interesting stuff relating to Black history in Chatham
If you are a nature buff then considering going over to Point Pelee or go to Leamington and take the ferry to Pelee Island.
If you are an art lover the Windsor Art Gallery is worth a visit.
And if you are a drinking person you might consider a visit to the Canadian Club distillary in Windsor.

Have fun.

Niagra is on the other side of the "penisula" (or whatever you call it). It is about a 3 or 4 hour drive.

The falls is really cool, but a bit of a tourist trap.
