If you can't get any information from police sources, you might try the archives at the local newspaper office.

Those kids were dropping like flies back then and for the next 10 years after. I suspect there were an awful lot of gang murders that are still unsolved to this day.
However if you know the date of the homicide you can check the newspaper's morgue (thats what they call it) which are where all the old files are stored. Usually programs are sent up so if you run the last name in the data base it will default on all names/articles with that name in it. Its a tiral and error type thing but it may be the only way you can get the information you're searching for.
