i am definetly going to buy a pair of pigeons to train them for two-way flying. First, though, i need to consider costs and preparation. At the moment, I need to figure out the monthly cost of food alone for a single pair of racing homers.

If they're in racing trim and not feeding young, a pigeon can get by with a tablespoon of feed per day. If they have young, then obviously they need lots more.

As for feed, that depends on your location. I'm in southern California and racing pigeon feed (depending on protein percentage, etc.) runs anywhere from $12 to $17 per 50 pounds.

As for two-way flying, it's somewhat difficult to do and involves having a loft in one area and feed in another. Even the military only used it over short distances when they were using pigeons.

Good luck though on trying it - I'd suggest if you haven't already gotten hold of them that you also contact the various homing pigeon organizations to see if you can find someone closer to you who might be able to help you out a bit.

I'm presuming here that you're in N. America, so you might want to check out the:

American Racing Pigeon Union http://www.pigeon.org

International Federation of Homing Pigeon Fanciers: http://www.ifpigeon.com

i'm a former chef from Canada and it has alot to do with most of the issues that the different have stated, North American see the pigeons as dirty highway vermin, and the european way of existence has been ingesting them for century's as far again because the historic Romans, genuine it truly is frequently happening as "Squab" the following yet isn't accessible in grocery shops or supermarkets, and it does have a better flavour than our standard hen. Alot has to do with those reason and the actual reality it isn't raised or produced the same way, as a boy I lived in a neighbourhood with Italian and varnish human beings and they saved pigeons, and for foodstuff elements, the pigeon should be youthful, by no skill have flown and by no skill older than 4-8 weeks, or it have a tendency to get difficult and stringy.
