I'm not from the States and I'm doing a little research for a story I'm writing.
In which part/s of Washington DC would an older, single man of a high military rank buy a house?
I've never been in DC and have no realistic image of what the residential area looks like. Maps are not very helpful when one needs something specific as this. Thank you!

Let's see here.. a single man with high military ranking-- depends on what he is like--

I would suggest Dupont Circle area-- this place has a ton of nice house and apartments that are very American. I would also suggest Rock Creek Park--- its a wooded area of DC.

I believe most of the military people live outside of DC though.. out in Virginia-- like Pentagon City, Crystal City, Alexandria. I say outside of DC because the Pentagon -the military's headquaters- is right outside of DC on the other side of the Potomac River. The area located near the Pentagon is rightfully named Pentagon City.

Capitol Hill has a nice residential area in the heart of the city, it is pretty expensive though.
Also, try consulting a website like www.century21.com or ReMax.com and do a property search for houses for sale in Washington DC, this will give you an idea of where homes are available and also how much they cost!

Best of luck.

If you insist on Washington DC, I'd say The best part is called Georgetown... or along Massachusetts or Connetticut avenues. Or at least that used to be the place. Now I don't even live in the country.
