In your own opinion, do you think putting your dog in a crate/kennel is ok when you aren't home or sleeping?

Yes I do...dogs actually create dens in the wild for protection and security. A kennel replicates this feeling and satisfies this instinct. In fact my German Shepard was so dependent on his kennel until he was about 4 years old that he would not go to sleep at night unless the crate door was shut and latched. If I just put him to bed and didn't latch the door, he'd come to my room and whine until I got out of bed. Then he'd run to his kennel and get in and not lay down until the door was shut and latched. It was his home--his safe place--and it made everyone sleep better at night.

Yes it saves on the wear and tear of the house which a dog can do, it also provide a safe place for your dog to go to be alone, just remember that dogs do have to get used to a kennel or crate before leaving the dog for longer periods. Also, dogs should be alowed to go potty in an appropriate place after eight hours of confinment as adults, and more often at various yonger ages, as a good rule you can use age plus one, thus a four month old puppy should not be left for more than 5 hours with out a potty break, to avoid the puppy using the crate as a potty place.

I think using a crate/kennel is absolutely ok, especially when you are not home. If you have a young dog or puppy, it not only keeps him from destroying things in your home, but it keeps him safe from getting into things like medicines, cleaning supplies, electrical cords, etc. Once a dog is older and understands where he can and cannot go or get into, i think its fair to give them run of the house. I truly believe the crate is for the dogs safety early on.

I have 2 puppies and they were introduced to a crate the first day I got them. Now, when I cannot locate them I go to the crate and they are usually in there sleeping! This becomes a safe haven for them to go when they want some quiet time. I have a soft bed and a couple of toys in there. As long as you do not leave them in there for a big amount of time they are very nice. A puppy needs to pee quite often and you do not want them to have to eliminate in their crate.

Yes, they usually don't mind it at all. My dog loves his kennel and willing goes in it. Sometimes dogs will cry or whine when put in a kennel, but it is best to just ignore this so they will stop doing it.

No. I prefer to let my dogs have the run of the house. I will close doors to rooms I wish to keep them out of.

That having been said, dogs who have been crate trained and sleep in their crates may prefer it but, if that is the case, simply leave the crate door open and they will go inside if they want to.

Unless your dog is destroying everything in your house, why would you want to crate it at all?

My min pin hated the crate, he would freak out when he was in it, i used to have to sleep on the floor next to him to try and get him used to it (never worked)

However, I have 2 Dachshund pups and they love it, i have to prop the door open cause they go in there to chew on bones and sleep and stuff. I do keep it in the living room when we are in there, but i don't bring it in the bedroom and they don't seem to mind.

When they're a pup, yes. When they're an adult and more 'responsible' about things like housetraining, chewing on things, barking uncontrollably at squirrels, no.

I think it is okay for when they are puppies but once they get trained you should let them roam the house.
