Since we need so many more troops (20 - 90K) why not let the illegals that are already here join the military. And make it that if they serve 1 year in a combat zone, they qualify for a conditional resident card. If they serve six years in the military then they can apply for US Citizenship!

Stephanie you are making a false assumption. I am a 24+ year veteran who has served overseas.
What have YOU done for your country (and don't say "paying taxes")?

I got my draft notice in 1972, but joined for 4 years instead of the 2 year draft term. The illegal aliens would not be drafted, they would have a choice- go into the military and get a benefit.
Same as with the GI Bill. Many citizens join the military for other benefits. So why shouldn't illegals be given the chance?

i don't mind the idea of requiring public service in order to get amnesty or citizenship. Honestly, if those who wanted to become Americans were given a clear-cut path to citizenship, I think more than 80% of them would sign up quickly. The quagmire of an immigration policy that our nation operates under is a significant contributor to any illegal immigration problem we have. (I witnessed the immigration process first-hand through a family friend who immigrated from Slovakia. It was unbelievable the amount of hoops an employed, hard-working immigrant who hasn't broken a law in her life had to jump through in order to become a citizen.)
However, there are potential problems with your suggestion that you may want to consider:
- I'm not sure that we want to turn our military into a haven for anyone seeking citizenship. Our volunteer force is effective because people know what they're getting into & yet join anyway. There are some who only join in order to get help paying for college, but I think it's safe to say most join the military because they want to be in the military. Were we to vastly increase the size of our ground troop forces (who would have to be paid & given room and board) with lots of immigrants who might not speak English well & who *might* not have the morale or patriotism of volunteer soldiers, I'm not sure we wouldn't mess things up for the military (someone with military experience could speak to this better than I);
- There has already been criticisms of our current military being stocked with young people from poor families who go off to fight wars started/caused by the wealthy and powerful. I'm guessing that throwing hundreds of thousands of destitute immigrants on the front lines, each with a rifle, a pair of boots and some MREs, wouldn't improve that situation.
But I appreciate your outside-the-box thinking. ;) I probably don't agree with you regarding the nature of our immigration "problem", but I see that you're looking for solutions other than "build a wall & throw the immigrants over it", an illogical and unethical argument that we see all too often around here. I appreciate your effort at actually thinking about this issue rather than lashing out at it like some tr0lls around here do.

In all honesty, I comply with some extent that mandatory service will be triumphant. notwithstanding, it is going to under no circumstances grow to be. we were too lengthy with voluntary defense force that the folk will under no circumstances enable it take position. we ought to always have made it that way a lengthy time period in the past fairly of using the draft. Or replaced it from the draft to mandatory service. Serving your united states must be a good honor and may deliver pride. 2 years isn't a lengthy time period. they can provide them the alternative for more suitable time and let them qualify for the hot GI bill.

Well military service has always been the fast track to citizenship, it shows loyalty to the United States. Forget illegals, whom should, you have so many anti US people in our own population that they should be drafted first !

That's a dumb idea. It's conscription and discrimination built into one. Let people who want to serve make that decision, don't force anyone to for whatever reason. BTW: the marines contain more Latin Americans than any other majority, so it looks they are choosing to do something.
