Try to understand your cat's needs and don't train it.

You can get feliway or some other spray that you put on the furniture. That will keep the kitty from clawing. We have the same prob, and we jsut talked to the PEtco person about it. He said to put the sratching post about a foot away from where the cat like to scratch (pick the cat's fave scratching spot). Usually after naps cats wake up and stretch and want to scratch things... so watch him/her after he wakes up. Anytime that the cat uses the scratching post rather than the furniture/wall give it a treat. That was create a positive association for your cat the the post= a treat.

why , dont you use the cat nails cripping where you can buy at the pet shop and just crip the cat nails so wouldnt have do torn anymore carepets or wall in the house . if you can also buy youre cat a cats play thing where you can stick it on the wall or just leave it on the carepet floor have youre cat just play with it or use it to sharpe it nails onto them when the cat wants to rip or scratch it paws . its looks like a wooden branch with a carepet on it . you can buy them at the pet market or ware house store . if you want to train youre cat for it behavor try to read some cats books .

You don't train the cat, you declaw it. Some other people might get their undies in a bunch about how "inhumane" declawing is, but according to my vet it's better than getting rid of the cat and sending to a shelter for ripping up your stuff.
Also - have you tried giving it some type of scratching post, rubbed down with catnip??

get a water bottle and fill it with water, everytime you catch the cat scratching spray it a couple times, it'll stop. get it a scratch post ans show the cat the proper places to scratch. you could get the cat declawed but it takes away from there natural ability as hunter and will never be able to catch that pesky mouse for ya. I have 4 cats not a single one of them is declawed and none of them scartch my carpets or my walls. My computer chair - yes but i allow it. I heard once that cats that scratch on walls do it cause they are addicted to the paint.

A water bottle or squirt gun works and get him some toys to tear up. It will take some time so be patient. I also clip my cats toe nails which helps, but when doing that don't clip them to short or the nail will bleed. You can see the tiny vein in the nail.

Good luck!

I dont mean to be sarcastic, but good luck. Some people have had success with water bottles or cat repelent. Ive only had one cat who listens to anything, and Ive had cats all my life.

Cats do their own thing, and thats just the type of animal they are.

Every time you see her do yell and scream and stomp your feet to show her your angry! In repitition she will learn, but it is important to show her evry time she does it that you don't like it and are mad at her. Like if she does it and later decides to sit next to you or something push her away if you feed her treats stop feeding her, when she goes for a day not doing it reward her with a treat, but if she dosen't become mad at her for the rest of the day. You might have to spray alittle water on her when she does it if that doesn't work add water with every thing else!

Good luck :)

I've never known anyone to have success training a cat to do or not do anything. They are so persistent! I finally got rid of mine and got dogs. At least they pay attention and mind.
