This will help you to avoid to be at 5:am to take a plane that will take off at 9:am.

I suppose that would work if you could find room, and figure out a way to direct the flight paths to be sure that all airplanes remain out of the restricted airspace over Manhattan

If you include Newark, the New York metro area has many more commercial flights than LA has. LAX is the only large airport in LA. The other 6 are relatively small. EWR & JFK are 2 of the largest airports in the world (going by total # of flights)

The Port Athority already has four airports, Kennedy, Newark-Liberty, LaGuardia and Teterboro (Plus the Downtown Manhattan Heliport). and they are thinking of taking over Westchester airport also.
The time thing is about going through security.
