A little over a year ago I adopted a black lab mix puppy. He was timid and did not trust me. Over the past year he has opened up and is very loving. He has a great time running around on our 8 acres of land. However, recently he has been very aggressive towards visitors.

Twice this week I had a goup of people over for dinner. Both times he barked and growled so loud that the visitors got scared. Some of them wouldn't even get out of their cars.

He responds to my demands when it comes down to going outside, when I tell him to lie on his bed and time to eat. But when it comes to allowing guests to the house, he goes absolutly bazerk.

I can't put him in the backyard because I am on 8 acres of pastureland. The whole place is one giant backyard.

You can start by becoming the Alpha male, and not letting your dog rule you! If you have to put him on a leash, do it! When ppl visit, and he's on the leash (in your hand) and you (being the dutiful owner/friend of this dog), notice his demeaner; as soon as he begins to take an aggressive stance, you interact, allowing him to know that his behaviour will NOT be tolerated. For tips on how to do this, for real; check out Ceasar Milan; AKA the dog whisperer... I've trained animals all my adult life (and one dog, as a child; which my old friends refer to as "way smarter than that Lassie!"), and I've used Cesar's techniques recently with 100% success, he's fo' rizzo (for real)!

You simply need to leash your dog to a running line when you are expecting guests. He is protecting you as you protected him. It is pretty clear that he adores you. Don't punish him for that, he won't understand. Then again, I am a softy and always go with the animal's nature, what it tends to do, rather than try and get an animal to change it's behaviour.

Get another dog, or two more, you have the room and your dog may simply need to become more socialized. The company of other dogs will do this for him.

I understand that the tap on the nose thing does work but please don't say 'bad dog', use the behaviour instead, such as,
'bad bark' or 'good sit' 'good stay' . I like to just tell my dogs, when they are doing something wrong, to stop. When they do I reinforce their good behaviour by telling them 'good sit or good whatever" I never use bad dog. They aren't bad dogs, they are simply being dogs.

well he may have been an abused puppy. and if they don't know someone then they are guarded and are going to be protective of the one person that takes care of them....my black lab was kinda that way...the propane man came to fill our tank and he burned my dog with a cigarette....he hates large trunks pulling to the house now

Call the vet and ask him if you nueter him will he calm down.I have heard that once nuetered they do.If he gets himself under control when you tell him then he's just trying to protect the house. You may have to get a runner and put him on that when you have company over...ask the vet.......
