Is it possible to install a copy of WinXP OVER a copy of Win2k and keep your existing applications, or does it put a clean installation on the HDD?

that would depend on whether it's a full version of XP or just an upgrade.

personally I have found the performance of machines that have been upgraded to run far less than optimum. most likely due to all the garbage in the registry..

If possible you want to do a fresh installation of the OS, you will have less problems down the road...

I put XP over my Millenium - about the same as 2000 - went smoothly, but a number of previous programs did not 'mate' with XP (like Kodak Easyshare) and I had to get updated versions. A couple erased everything I had previously kept. Lost all my bookmarks with the newer IE, for example. But otherwise, well worth it!

You should be able to, I had XP Professional crash on me, and I didn't have the recovery dick, so I loaded XP home and I still had files from Professional on my hard drive. I believe you have the option to partition or clean install.
