There are some good options out there when it comes to anti-virus programs, I've personally tried two I'd recommend:
AVG and Avast!
Both have, aside from the free version, a version you can purchase, but those only have some extra options that are not vital for your protection, though they can be quite useful, once you've been using the program for a while you can decide if those options are worth the price.
I use AVG at home, and it has kept my computer clean for a few years now (and it has found a bunch of viruses my previous anti-virus couldn't find)
I'm not so familiar with Avast! though I use it at work and it seems to work fine too.
However any anti-virus program is probably effective as long as you keep it up to date.

Anything that is free is sketchy, especially anti-virus software. In my experience, the best anti-virus software has been PC-Cillun and SPY SWEEPER (with anti-virus). Norton is decent but the latest version of it really slows the computer down (take that into consideration when you download or buy, especially if youdon't have a lot of RAM). McCaffee has trouble protecting against a few major viruses. I heard Windows Live was great as well, but the all the good stuff you have to pay for. PC-Cillun usually goes for about $49.99 and protects three PCs, so that's a spectacular deal. Point is, pay for anti-virus software.

Stay away from Norton people. It's a huge resource hog and slows down your computer.
AVG free is really good for home use. They also have a free spyware scanner. We use the network edition at the office. Works really well.

Personally, I like and use Avast, and have had it operating for over 3 years. It updates daily, and keeps my computer free from any virus infection.

If it is free, it is suspect. Get Norton Internet Security and pay for it.
