Sometimes it helps to have someone other than you (dad, grandma?) give the baby a bottle. Some babies take right to the bottle from the breast with no problem - actually some babies can go back & forth with no problem. I agree with the suggestion of maybe just going directly to the sippy cup at 8 months - it's worth a try. GOOD LUCK!

I have a story to tell you; when my youngest was 10 months old, my daughter contracted a virus and was hospitalized. During this time I worried so much about her that my milk stopped. I bought a 'Tommy Tippy Cup' and gave my son liquids from it. He could still suck but now he was able to hold the cup. He drank from the cup for about 3 months and then I slowly allowed him to drink from a glass. All of these changes never bothered him. One day I was visiting with a neighbor, who had a son who was still drinking from a bottle, my son saw the bottle - picked it up and looked at it strangly. My neighbor asked "why does he look at the bottle like that?" I responded "he's never seen one before".
Baby bottles are not good because they damage the teeth. It is much better to switch them to a 'sippy cup' and never put them on a bottle. By switching to a 'sippy cup' you will never have to wean them off of a bottle.

Why stop berastfeeding? If you need to go to work etc, just pump while at work and give him a cup. I wouldn't go to a bottle now, then you have to wean again in a few months, not worth it. I breastfed both my kids until they were 15months old and had gone back to work several months before that with my first. I didn't even need to pump that much because he would just have a good meal of solids when I was working and some juice to drink if it was a short shift. If it was a longer shift, I would pump once or twice while at work and then once more at home.
As far as convincing him/her to drink from a cup, try first with a little juice or water so that he/she can't get it from another source. Once the baby likes or at least tolerates the cup, its easy from there.

Going straight to the cup makes life easier for all. But, if you want them to use a bottle, pump off some breast milk and put it in a bottle. Since 8 months is a little young for cow's milk, you can offer them formula with iron. I started pumping off breast milk and putting it a bottle, when they start taking the bottle, I started adding formula to the breast milk, until they were just taking formula.
Good luck.

Try a sippy cup instead of a bottle.
