How does lazer hair removal work and does it hurt?

The lasers are attracted to melanin which is what gives your hair color. When you are treated, the laser heats up the hair shaft and thereby creates a fine scar at the follicle level where blood is supplied. Without a blood supply, the follicle cannot grow hair. Because the treatment is dependent on a hair existing, the laser can only treat follicles in the active growth stage. For that reason, you generally need 4-6 treatments to ensure that you treat each of the active follicles.

The treatments does sting a bit and the pain is dependent on where you are treated and how dense your hair growth is as the pain comes form the heating of the follicles. Each subsequent treatment hurts less because there is less "heating" with each laser pulse.

Hope this helps. I have attached a site with more info and a site that ranks and certifies providers.

The laser slows the growing capacity of follicles in the growth cycle at the time of the treatment. Since some hair follicles may enter their growth cycle after your treatment, multiple treatments may be required to deliver optimal results and completely stop hair growth. Treatment results will vary from patient to patient depending on skin and hair color.
