I think that if US troops abandon Iraq, a lot of what was accomplished and what COULD be accomplished would be totally destroyed. In the world's view, the US has always been there to help, no matter what. If we start pulling out now, slowly but surely opinions of the US will go downhill. I'm not condoning war- but some things are necessary. I'm not experienced enough to say what we should have done- we just need to persevere.
And yes, maybe some people were happy that Saddam was in Iraq, but honestly, look at what he did. The people's lives may have been simple, but there was no free thought- ideas were quashed under the weight of tyranny.

They weren't happy but the death/torture rate was lower pre-invasion. If the US/UK troops leave now there will be a civil war (which there kind of is already). This is why we should not have gone. Imposed democracy does not work. Or imposed borders for that matter - there is no "Iraqi people". They are 3 seperates groups that idiotic imperial Brits lumped together with a ruler.
p.s. America did not enter WW2 because of Hitler but because of Japan and Pearl Harbour.
p.p.s. 9/11 had NOTHING to do with Iraq.

I think at first it would be a disaster with a lot of chaos, but after a short period of time they will realize that no one is going to bail them out this time. Once they get to that point, they will begin working on rebuilding themselves and formulating some sort of government. As long as we are holding their hands and doing all the work for them, they have no real need to push forward because they know that we will do it for them.
Leave Iraq to Iraqis and they may surprise everyone, they might even stop hating us a little for destroying their country if we at least give them a shot at running it.

Just my opinion, but I think that it would be a slap in the face to our military.
I believe that Iraq would fall to another Saddam type leader, one that my be even worse. Then, the men and women that lost their lives will have done so in vain. Nothing would have changed.
I think that the people of Iraq were as happy with Saddam as the Jewish were with Hitler. Your contention that they were happier before is absurd to me.
Anyone that claims that people are happy with genocide and mass killings has to be crazy.
Again, just my opinion.

Iran would most likely step in, put a puppet Shiite in power, destroy what Sunni Muslims were left, and attempt to establish another Caliphate between the Tigris and Euphates. President Ahmadinejad is just waiting in the wings for the U.S. to pull out. He would annex Iraq take over all of its oil fields and infrastructure and be in a better position to "wipe Israel off the map." This would only be the beginning....

The people ACTED happier under Saddam because to do otherwise would result in their own or their families death in very brutal ways. If the US leaves the region before it is stable it will collapse, the Iranians will take over the region and we will end up fighting the terrorists here in the US.

I don't think the people Saddam murdered would agree with you... I think Iraq is extremely vulnerable right now. If we just left, their new government would fall apart. Another terrorist regime would take over and breed even more hatred killing even more innocent people. You know, Hitler didn't really do anything to AMERICA either...but who's willing to stand by while innocent people are slaughtered???

1. What will happen?
a government controlled by syria and/or iran will emerge. This government will take the proceeds of its rich land and use it to encourage and finance terrorist acts against any non-muslim community, starting with Israel, and working its way to the US. This will grow into a problem too large to handle without full scale war.
2. On your 'opinion':
what brought you to this personal opinion? Have you spoken to any Iraqi people? Have you spoken to hundreds of soldiers who have been in Iraq, who have spoken to the iraqis? Or did you come to this 'personal opinion' based on something a far left wing radical socialist has told you?
why do you not think other people in this world do not want to make choices like you are allowed to do? Why do you think less of their freedom than your own? would you be happy knowing you could be raped, tortured, or murdered at any moment because you are not of the same sect as the dictator?
That statement is as ignorant as saying, "I personally think that tiger is as happy in that 10 foot cage as he would be in the wild".
Why shouldn't everyone enjoy the freedoms we enjoy? What kind of liberal can say they shouldn't?

If you look at their history from biblical times, there has always been a one-man rule. Those rulers were not necessarily kind to the people, but that is their history. Personally, I think democracy is a foreign concept to them. When we leave they will get another dictator or they will divide along religious lines, the Kurds, the Sunnis and the Shiites.
