Books are not used anymore to swear an oath in courts of modern civilized countries .

I didn't swear an oath. I gave an affirmation, and used no book. The courtroom also did not use a Bible. For oaths and affirmations, the witness had but to raise his right hand.

in the UK you can affirm quiet safely, I've done it as a jury member and so did some of the accused. that fact was not even raised in the jury room. if i had to swear an oath on any book it would be Capetian France 987-1326 because I've got it here in front of me.

I don't think they actually make you put your hand on the Bible anymore, they just ask you to swear to tell the truth. IF they brought out the book when (if) I were to testify I would refuse to place my hand the book but I would still swear to tell the truth. If they didn't like it then they would be interfering with my rights to religious freedom, wouldn't it?

I guess it depends on the jurisdiction on whether they trot out the Bible to swear on.

If I were to be forced to swear on the bible then my oath is worthless and I can lie my a ss off on the stand.

Not an Atheist, BUT I have never liked the idea of swearing on the bible or when taking an oath saying "so help you god". Religion ought not have anything to do with government.

As for what I'd like to be swore in under, how about the US constitution?

None. You don't have to swear on a book, but it does mean that you have to suffer through a little bureaucracy and it slows things down. Some atheists just go ahead and swear on the bible (because they feel it doesn't matter - and maybe it doesn't), but I'm prideful, perhaps.
