Can I ask another question for Muslims?

Why can't some Muslims pet dogs, shake hands with women, eat with their left hand, and roll pant legs above your ankles before you pray? I'm reading about it in the February issue of Readers Digest.

Before prayer, this man had to roll pant legs above ankles. Why?

this is happening in many areas, of globe, mainly beacose of thier traditions, it is nothing to do with islam or with religion. neither ever religion prohibited it. so its social trend rather than religious stuff.

dont eat with left hand?

it got following logic accordring to religion: islam say clearly to use the left hand in toilet and dont use right hand while in toilet. and only use right hand for eating, and this was implemented in tribal society of arabia 1500 yrs ago, there was open toilets at that time, no concept of hygeine and sanitation any where in world of that time, so in order to protect people from diseases and infections islam ordered an logical and practial way to use left hand during your natural calls and use right hand for eating. so to avoid any chances of infection. i hope you will understand it fully.

why roll pants over ankles befor pray?

in arabia, at the time of islam, there was a tribal society, in that society (also in most of monarchy of world) it was a symbol of proudness and symbol of rich people to use long dresses below thier feet, and they used extra clothing to show that they are rich and they can roll-down the dress to dust and ground , and got edge over other ordinary and poor people who cant afford to even have full dress.
so inorder to implement equality while praying to god, also as a symbol of humbleness while praying islam said that dont wear a such a dress which is extending from ankles. this was the sprit, when it was implemented. so now most of people who dont understands, its origional concept still roll pants above ankles while praying. may be they do it as act as they see thier forefathers also do it while praying.

I'm a Muslim and my daughter has 3 dogs and they definitely get petted. My husband also a Muslim, his brother has 2 dogs both German Shepard's so that takes care of that one. But we don't have dog hairs or saliva on our clothes when praying we have to be clean of such things before pray maybe this is where the confusion lies. I have shaken hands with many people of all different creeds, colours and religions so I cant understand that one either. Muslim women don't greet other men with say a kiss on the cheek even a platonic friend that is to do with respecting your husband and having certain boundaries we don't cross. True we do not eat with our left hand that is because we use our left hand for bathroom purposes (I'm sure you know what i mean) and we keep our right hand for good things eating, Putting right foot into the mosque first etc. And why would you want to roll pant legs above your ankles before praying? What would be the point. We have to be covered when we pray as do men what would be the purpose of rolling your pant legs up? Do Christians roll there pant legs up before praying? A rhetorical question i know they don't, just trying to demonstrate how silly it sounds. I hope i answered your question for you. Any more feel free. Ah you are asking he rolled his pant legs up before pray. This is because before we pray we have a washing ritual. Hands 3x, mouth 3x, inside nose 3x, face 3x, over hair and back again 1x, round and inside your ear 1x, then your feet on top and underneath this is why he would have rolled his trousers up, to wash his feet. He would have rolled them back down before praying though.

Anya we use knives and forks and i have never heard of an orthodox muslims we are all just muslims its not preceded with anything. Denominations is going against the teachings of Islam.

thats a good point..u must know.its nothing like dictating the Muslims.like every religion has ts own disciplines and norms,even in Christianity and Hinduism.
well dogs r said 2 b dirty..not always clean whn aftr it has come frm out(as a dog has 2 b free sometime of the day,evn as a pet)..and touching it b4 prayer or something is not good.and also if it stays inside ur house,then it would spoil the place,n v r free 2 pray anywhere as long as it clean,like our house. but i wouldnt mind having one as a pet.
as 4 shaking hands,i have no idea,coz i do shake hands with boys.
the next one is naturally understood.u do every othr things with ur left hand,n sometimes dirty things 2o.ppl eat with their left hand,othr than muslims,but surely using their spoons or forks..not directly.its really disgusting 2 think(honestly).
well prayer has some disciplines.like even in Christianity u cant just do anything when u pray.and in Hinduism u need 2 concentrate and only think of god and not do bad things in the prayer room.so when we pray,our shape of the body and anything above our knees shouldn't b seen.its quite open then,isnt it?? and as for women,u should b cover ur arms and hands.more discipline 4 women as they have 2 b not so much...u know open.

Well muslims are allowed to keep dogs for hunting or for security purpose but they can't have it for fun at home...We were given this order, But now science has proven this that dog is not a good pet to keep at home..rabies is most common disease that is spread by licking if infected dog on human skin if it is bruised , because dogs sliva contain that virus which is transferd thru the open skin into blood stream ....we are told to clean the utensil several times if dog lick it somehow, again the same reason. and now science has proven it

Well muslims can only shake hands with the one whome she can't marry like father, brother, son etc.and why?? so these are some limits for us from our religion.. its just to aviod the immoral thought that comes to the person'mind when touching the opposite sex.

we are asked to eat with right hand not with left, and everyone eat with right hand. its easier and convineint.. its Sunnah, the things which our prophet have done we follow it that way. he used to eat with right hand so do we !!

And rolling pants , so its an order for muslim men to keep their pant slightly above the ankel....these were limits told for both men ,woman are given differnt order
one reason for that which comes to my mind is that those days roads were dusty and dirty not like modern days roads, and after raining or even without rain, by walking through that dust , ther were chances of getting the trousers dirty , and with that muslims can not offer prayer..that why they used to keep the pants high to avoiid that inconvineince as it was not possible to wash the dress again and again....again its a sunnah that our muslim males follow.

You are also reading about orthodox Muslims. I know many religious Muslims that do these things. I know unorthodox Muslims who do not do these things.

The Orthodox reasoning is: Dog's mouth is so dirty, a man and a woman should never touch unless they are married (this goes for orthodox Jews, too), The Arab way of eating is with the hand, not silverware, and the right hand is for eating, the left for toilet needs, and I am not sure of the last. I'd say because it is showing too much of the body.

In a time before the discovery of germs, the only way to understand that dogs are carriers of diseases was to generally prohibit touching dogs. The same reaons Jews were commanded to wash their hands before eating, even though they didn't know why three thousand years ago.

I don't recall reading that the Qur'an prohibits shaking womens' hands. Maybe that is a conservative interpretation.

I've never heard about the other thiings you've mentioned.

To the Dogs question: Dogs are referred to as inferrior, dirty, carnivores.. They're not seen as pets.
In most muslim religious countries, it is disrespectful and against the faith to touch (or look directly at) a woman who is not your wife or a family member.
I'm not sure about the left hand thing - Sorry.

Well i will ans ur question because i realized from ur words that u r really concerned with islam not like other fanatics whom make fun of us
Well dogs r God creature we don't hate what God made, but its saliva contains a lot highly infectious bacteria i really don't remember its name,
we muslims can breed dogs if we have a garden with our houses for security and to guide blind poeple but not in our houses otherwise i will have to wear gloves when i deal with them

We have mercy with animals, i will tell u 2 stories concerned with that issue our prophet told us about
A jewish prostitute ( in some stories she was a lesbian)was walking once in the desert , she found a thirsty dog wondering around her, so she used her shoe to fill it with water from a well to the dog after she drank, For the compassion she showed to the helpless animal God forgave all her sins and allowed her to go to the heavens
the 2 nd story a woman locked a cat in a room and starved it till death , God sent her to the hell although she may appear as a good woman and muslim
the Christians in tne middle ages burnt the witches with their black cats as they thought they were used in black magic purposes and heresy, they were right to deal with the witches like that , but they should have should some mercy with a helpless animal

we love animals and show mercy with them but not at expense of our health
and in ur readings about islam try to judge us fairly


About rolling pants above the ankle; it was a sunna taken from our prophet( not obligatory) because pants drag dirt on walking so men May shorten them, to pray for their god in a clean manner

Eating with right hand it is funny.. u may ear with ur dominant hand either left or right! it depends on ur dominant cerebral hemisphere

Respectively: hygiene, temptation and lust, satan, as long as the pants legs come below the knee the muslim man can pray. He doesn't have to roll his pants above the ankles. He needs to take his shoes off thats about it.

Well Muslims are sexist by nature and they wipe their rear end with their left hand so thats why they eat with their right hand. Dogs can sense evin in people, so thats why they dont like dogs. I have gone into bathrooms just before prayer time and they are all washing their feet and ankles in the sink. I was like hello I wash my hands there you nasty dirty people !!!!
