A family holiday dinner is scheduled for noon. Eight of the 12 guests are there on time. The other 4 (dad,mom, 2-year-old, and infant) are 30-45 minutes late. The food is getting cold, and the missing family doesn't call. Do we eat or do we wait?

After waiting 20 minutes, I would start to eat. This is only proper etiquette. when they arrive, explain that you waited, for a little bit and everyone was hungry, so we ate, then say come on it and make yourself a plate. Let that be the end of it. They will be embarrassed enough as it is.

Eat Eat Eat..with the young children, there's no telling if and when they will show up. No sense in being rude to the rest of your guests.

You eat. Why let the food go cold and then make them feel bad because of it? They'll come earlier next time if there's no meatloaf left, dig?

Give it 15 more minutes and if they do not call, call them. If you can not get a hold of them, then you can start eating.

well....the people with babies KNOW that they have babies and should plan their time accordingly.
they will feel crappy if they show up late to find everyone waiting to eat cold food.

Considering they have two babies, I would probably wait. Anyone juggling two young ones will probably be late. They should call however, that is just good manners.

call and see where they are, if they are close by wait for them if their gonna be a while go ahead and eat
