it's a great thing.
a brazilian martial art.
it originated as a disguised way for the slaves to get strong
they were getting strong to fight but had to make it look like
a dance so as not to get in trouble. it's very acrobatic and
you have to be very strong. it's a great thing for kids to do.
great for fitness, fighting obesity, self esteem, keeping them
out of trouble, making friends, controlling body and emotions etc.
great!

Capoeria is a Brazilian dance form that's a sort of cross between dance and martial arts. It's quite amazing and majestic to watch. Performances are often improvised on the spot - the participants stand in a circle and two dancers at a time spontaneously go to the middle and "spar." But they never touch each other.
It's great that the school offers such a non-violent and culturally educational activity. It's a far better option than the dramatically over-masculine and violent football and wrestling.

Capoeira is a martial arts form that combines rythym, dancing, and defense. It has become increasingly popular over the last few years, especially for its ability to be adapted to many forms of dance. A true discipline, there are many groups out there that teach the art of capoeira, either free or for a small fee.

Capoeira (IPA: [ka.puËej.ɾÉ]) is an Angolan martial art practiced in Brazil by enslaved Africans in Brazil starting in the 1500s. It originated by Nigerian or Angolan ethnic groups where members fought with music and the winner won a partner, usually female. Participants form a roda (circle) and take turns playing instruments, singing, and sparring in pairs in the centre of the circle. The game is marked by fluid acrobatic play, feints, subterfuge, and extensive use of groundwork, as well as sweeps, kicks, and headbutts. Technique and strategy are the key elements to playing a good game. Capoeira has two main styles, known as "regional" and "Angola.

It's a Brazilian Martial Art/Dance, and while theoretically you could defend yourself with it, there is no physical contact in the gym.
If you want to see http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=8496062074493655736&q=capoeira
And make him do it. It's good exercise.
