MiniDV- easiest format to edit and offers highest quality (when compared to a similar cam of a different format)

HDV- not as easy to edit as miniDV, but some programs support it natively. Still offers the highest quality in consumer/pro format (not counting DVCPRO 100).

dvds- kill yourself before you edit one of these. however, if you decide to shoot and watch, you can just pop it into your dvd player. but if you decide to add or change something later, you're out of luck.

Personally, i think you should go for a miniDV or HDV cam. Each one is more versatile than a DVD cam, and if you decide not to edit, burning to a disc takes no more than 10 minutes. But to decide which one you want you need to see what you have or are willing to get. If you want HD, you need a good editing computer, a dual core computer is good. A single core below 2 ghz is probably not okay. If have something like this, then youre probably good to go. If not, then your probably going to want to upgrade your computer, or just stick with SD miniDV. Another fact to take into consideration is whether you have an HD set or not. If you dont have one, you might as well stick with SD: its cheaper, you're not a pro (no offense intended, its just that pros have a greater need of HD than consumers do right now), you probably wont have to upgrade your computer (although you might), and you wont be able to see the HD difference anyways if you dont have an HD set. BTW, to transfer miniDV or HDV video to a computer, you need a firewire port and cable. If your computer doesnt have one, you can purchase a PCI adapter card. Hope this helps!

I just bought a mini dvd sony camcorder and returned it for a minidv because I found it wasn't much different. It records directly on a dvd which I could only get to play in my Xbox 360 and not my dvd player. It was more difficult for me to figure out but that was probably just me. If you want to edit it on your computer you will have to of course buy additional software because the Sony dvd only comes with a free trial demo. Also, once you record on the dvd it can't be recorded over or at least I couldn't get it to where as on a minidv you can record over and over. And on a mini dvd you can only record for 30 instead of the longer times on mini tapes. Hope this helps. I ended up with the minidv because it was simpler and the quality wasn't any different than a minidvd for the price. Mini dvd's are much more expensive. I would recommend the miniDV HD
