My dog stays indoor all day except to use the bathroom. He's a 70lb chocolate lab. I give him a bath with doggie deoderant shampoo, but after 3-4 days, he stinks again. My female lab can go for weeks without a bath and she smells fine. Is there anything I can do? I've tried bath wipes and sprays, but nothing seems to work.

I don't bathe my dog everyday, I just live with the smell until it's bath time again. I usually bathe him once every 3 weeks or so. My female only needs a bath once a month.

SOME DOGS JUST STINK MORE!

There is a shampoo for dogs that you can by (I get mine at Wal-Mart.) It is Apple smelling and green in color. It is made especially for stinky dogs (I can't remember the name of it at the moment...if I can remember I will come back :) ). Anyways I use it on my dogs and it REALLY WORKS!!!!

Discuss this with a veterinarian. It could be his diet. Often what animals eat affect how they smell, but if you have two dogs and both eat the same thing, that is probably not it.

The dog may have some sort of gland problem that should be checked out which is causing that smell, or the vet may be able to offer some advice on things to feed him or pills he can take that will reduce or eliminate the smell.

Maybe he's just really hot. Labs are traditionally an outdoor dog and if the house is really warm, it may be affecting his body chemistry.

Also, was he fixed? Some dogs give off a musky odor when they are in heat or to try and attract the opposite gender.

First of all, stop bathing the dog so much. You are drying up his coat and you are causing skin problems. Second of all, I feel your pain, I had a yellow lab that stank to high heaven and back, ALL THE TIME. And if you bathed him he smelled even worse. I tried changing his diet and that worked out a little bit, but the stench never really went away. People would smell him from the distance and would even ask me if I was working "Bo" that day. Either you get used to it or you end up giving up the dog.

I also have a black lab 92lbs. He is an indoor dog and goes out only for the same reason as yours. He also comes in stinking, I don't know what it is. Maybe there is a patch of something in the garden or lawn that does not agree with him. Bathing him that often will dry out his skin. Plus a royal pain. Go to your Vet clinic, they have a deodorizer that does wonders. I don't spray it on him directly as he seems to dislike that but spray it on a cloth and rub him down.. Smell is gone till the next time he goes out. It is worse when he is wet. This works.

Is your male intact? If so then neutering him will help to reduce the odor drastically. Another reason may be that his anal glands need to be drained, your vet can do that for you it really helps alot! Dogs especially males, create a variety of scents that are used in communication.. the anal gland secretes a drop of scent onto their feces as it passes out their anus, it effectively tags the feces and identifies the owner who is marking the territory. Un-neutered males are far more territorial and produce more scent in their anal glands also when they smell a female in heat they stink even more. Also because your dog is a water dog, they tend to have a more oily skin which can get pretty stinky as well, you may try using a waterless bath such as Professional Pet Products waterless bath, it smells like coconut and it helps with the smell between baths... I use it on my stinky female lab mix because she has really greasy skin and fur if I dont. I suggest though that you do clear his anal glands because in the past it has helped me tremendously to reduce the stinky smell of a male dog.

You could try some Nilodor shampoo and a change of diet maybe? Have you tried the raw diet?

You might want to check with a Vet and see if there is a supplement or other kind shampoo that could help. Sometimes diet causes the stinky coat, sometimes a skin condition, sometimes both.
Hope you find something that helps.

Some dogs smell more than others. Labs are big offenders because they were bred to be water dogs. The oils in their coat keep them drier than others in the water but also cause more odor. I would try a shampoo that may cut the oil a little better. I prefer to use head and shoulders occasionally to do a better job and rinse cleaner than many dog shampoos.

I have a dog too and the same thing happens to me. I bought a special spray from Petsmart, the brand is "Groomax Spa" and it works perfectly between baths. I wash my dog once every 2 weeks. The next day after i wash her she smells again. I just spray her once every day and it lasts all day. Maybe you should try that.

Some dogs tend to have more of a "dog" smell than others. From what I have found, the smell is unavoidable. I would at least try some different shampoos and see if there is anything out there.

you should stop giving him so many baths. dogs should only be bathed about once every 2-3 weeks. it needs the oils for his skin. what you are doing is making is easier for dandruff. go to the petstore and purchase this spray called "nova pearls" when he starts stinking spray it on him and rub it in. it's good for his coat, and will freshen him up. stop bathing him so much.
