my son is going to join the army I think early next month, I don't know what job he picked, but do you think he would be in that 21,000 even if he picked a job like supplier?

If he is in the Army or Marines there is a good chance he will go as soon as he finishes basic training. Of course the recruiters who have quotas to meet aren't going to tell you that.

Having a large Military family that goes back to the Vietnam Days ; I can tell you with confidence that often the Air force and the Navy are the last to arrive and do so from a distance. Although they aren't in and of themselves completely excluded from the risks that all members vow to take when they sign on.

I live near an Army post that is sending it's people back for the 5th time!
My neighbor who is a Federal worker and also an Army Reserves Officer will be leaving for the Middle East within days of his being told. This will be his second tour.

During the holidays I met a guy with a wife and 3 kids who had just returned for a visit from his 3rd tour in Iraq. He is a Marine.

With the Army it is a matter of need that will ultimately determine your son's MOS. Even if he is guaranteed the supplier position. Once he belongs to the government they are free to do with him what they wish. He could start out as a Supplier and end up doing something completely different that year or within a year. No matter what his field he will be considered a Soldier first and as such is subject to the needs of the mission first.

Be proud of your son Brenda as he is choosing a career that he hopes will make a difference. I somehow doubt that he will be part of the additional troops that Bush has pledged as he has to be trained etc., before seeing any active duty. Also hopefully by the time he has finished training the States will be starting to remove their young people from this war that they cannot win and so there will be no need for him to go there. Support your son with his life choice and do not allow him to see your concern as it can affect him also. Good luck to you both.

There is nothing finer than a proud young man volunteering to fight for his country. I was in the Army from 1961 to 1981. I was with the 101st Airborne in Vietnam and Special Forces after I returned. Your son is lucky as today's Soldier has a much better percentage survival rate than a Soldier in my era. War is sometimes a necessary evil to protect our freedoms and our way of life. Thank God for the young Warriors that can carry the fight to the enemy in their countries instead of having it here on our streets.

he may end up going with his unit only after he is done with MOS school, but dont worry the United States Military provides some of the best training possible. If your son goes know that he will go well prepared.

Be extremely proud of your son. He is doing what he believes in.

I salute him and all the other young people who are following in his footsteps.

That is one of the things that make this such a great country.

No, he most likely wont be. It takes at least 4 months for basic and another 3 months to 2 years for his job specialty training. I wouldnt sweat it..
