You need to go to the primary care doctor and ask him her to send you to a nuerologist. The nuerologist will do all the testing. There is a site called children with Autism, it is a yahoo group and then there is another called Shadow Syndrome kids. Both of those groups can give you good input on where to go and you can describe symptoms to them and they may be able to help you trouble shoot. I have a seven year old Autistic son. I am a member of both groups.

After a child is two or three it becomes obvious if a child has autism but ultimately a diagnosis has to come from a doc. Autism is what it is called in the more severe cases. There are Autism-Spectrum-Disorders which include Asperger's Syndrome and it is just what it sounds like, a spectrum where Autism is at the more severe end. I'm not sure what makes you think your child is autistic but you and your child would be best served to go to the doctor and ask. You can go to the school district for help too. They are required to provide services for kids with developmental disabilities from birth to age 21.

In older children (3+) it is usually pretty obvious and you can get a good idea just by reading up on symptoms. For infants however it can be difficult to assess, so you'll need a professional. Either go to your regular doctor, or find out if there is an autism support group in your community.

First you need to read up on the symptoms. Wikipedia.org has a good informative article on autism. If you think your child fits then you need to get a professional opinion.Without an official diagnosis it will be difficult for your child to get help, especially if he/she is on the high-intelligence end of the spectrum.
One thing you need to consider is that every autistic child is different. There are a few universal characteristics, but many autistic individuals only exhibit a random assortment of the listed symptoms.

Start with your pediatrician and share your concerns. My son was diagnosed PDD which is in the autism spectrum. Because his preschool suggested I have him tested. I talked to my doctor and he referred me to a school pychologist. A nuerologist is the best person to go to first. Even the school system can test children for free as well . It's part of the "no child left behind" act.

Take your child to your family doctor and get a referral to a paediatrician. They can determine if a referral is appropriate for a full assessment, some of this will depend on the childs age....as they need to be of a certain age before any assessment done will be considered valid.

my son was not diagnosed til he was 12, up til then they had him pegged as ADHD (my son had a mild form of Autism -Ashburgers Syndrome) --- start with your family doctor who can recommend you to the proper places that can help get your child evaluated
