See below -- it looks like it is prescribed, cautiously, for individuals with bipolar illness. I hope your doctor is following you closely.
<
People with bipolar disorder often need medication during their periods of depression. Caution must be used when prescribing antidepressants for this group, however, as these medications sometimes induce mania. This happened in a very small group (0.4%) of people taking Zoloft during testing. Mood stabilizers such as lithium, Tegretol, and Depakote taken with an antidepressant may reduce the likelihood and severity of manic episodes. It is recommended that those taking lithium have their lithium levels monitored after beginning treatment with Zoloft, and appropriate adjustments made in the lithium dose if needed.>>
As for drinking with Zoloft, it seems like all medications say not to drink when you're on them, but in my experience, when they say that about Zoloft, they really mean it! I think the Zoloft uses the same pathway to be metabolized as alcohol, and drinking what seems like a reasonable amount can lead to an unreasonably bad hangover.

No the Zoloft wont help with the Bi Polar because it isn't designed for that disorder, a different medication is needed. Also it is common knowledge that you should never drink on medication, because it ups the chances of side affects or just stopping the affect of the medication....it can lead to death!

I have not personally heard of Zoloft treating Bi-Polarism...it is used primarily for anxiety and panic situations that patients complain of. No one should be consuming alcohol when taking psychotropic drugs. THe alcohol intensifies the medications side effects.

BI-Polar is a chemical issue in the brain, the brain has either to many or to little in the brain. Yes alcohol will have an affect because it interferes with time released chemicals in the brain from your meds. it alters the effects of your meds because most Bi-Polar pts are on a cocktail mix of meds, and they do not recommend taking other mood altering things such as alcohol or anything while on these type of meds, it alters the mood and it can increase or decrease your medication in your body immediately while on things other than your meds. relapses in your treatment is more likely than not.

Zoloft is an antidepressant and that's accessible that once taking them he will swap right into a manic episode. however, the consequences of maximum psychotropic drugs take about 2 weeks to attain its skill. If the overall practitioner that prescribed you the Zoloft is a psychiatrist, then i might want to save on such as his instructions and initiate taking them. even if the overall practitioner wasn't a psychiatrist, i might want to initiate taking them and agenda an appointment with a psychiatrist to be certain if he needs the different drugs. often times those with bipolar (like myself) will be placed on a blend of antidepressants, mood stabilizers, and antipsychotics. ought to his mood swap over to manic and issues get out of control, i might want to precise this second call a psychiatrist, or if one is unavailable, flow to the ER.

NO! Zoloft will not help if you are Bipolar...
You need a Mood Stabilizer, like Lithium or Depakote, or Lamictal.
People who are only on antidepressants are NOT Bipolar.

SSRIs will only exacerbate the problems associated with bi-polar. You can drink, but it will not help you.
