I have been engaged for 9 months to a man that I have been with for 11 years. He bought me an engagement ring online and I was under the impression it was real. Apparently so was he. But to make make things worse, my sister found out about it before I did since I had her take it in to be cleaned and the jeweler told her it was not real, so my whole family knows. How do I deal with this?

Is the ring what is important to you? Or is it merely a symbol of your fiance's love? If you care more for his love than the ring, then what does it matter what he puts on your finger?

There are a couple of points to cover here.

First off, Congrats on the engagement and I wish you all the best.

Secondly, I understand your surprise, however, it is the fact this man wants to marry you. After 11 years I would think that this is a huge step. But, it's not the value of the ring that makes your relationship better or stronger. Make sure you are marrying this man for the right reasons. Did you need a 3 carat ring to marry him?

And Finally, I don't know where he bought the ring from online. However, if he paid with a credit card or with paypal and the person misrepresented the ring, he can contact the seller and try to resolve it. If the seller cleary stated it was real, contact the credit card company and talk with them. If by chance he bought it on eBay, they can protect you from sellers that misrepresent items that they sell.

Don't let your family put a price on your relationship. Obviously this man means a lot to you if you have been together for 11 years. A ring is a ring, it's not like you'll be married to that ring. You can always upgrade later if you want!

I wish you all the best.

You just do...Think about it.... buying stuff online is a risk..... You bought it cause it was cheap im guessing?....You thought it was an absolute steal at that price for a ring of that size? That alone should have sent the alarm bells ringing. Try and get back onto the seller and tell them you are not happy and you know the ring is a fake and you would like your money back or you will take it further.
PS: I have a 1.01 carat princess cut engagement ring and although I love my sister dearly I would never give my ring to her to take to a jeweller to have it cleaned, just on the off chance she lost it or something.

Just curious... how do you know her jeweler didn't take out the real stone. A stone that big shouldn't go to just anyone and certainly never to be cleaned or altered out of my sight. I know some jewelers will take it into a back room for inspection and cleaning ... not something I would ever trust.

As far as dealing with it ... go back to the person who sold the ring and see if you can get any verification ... I guess I'm not a very trusting person, I rarely do online purchasing and definitely not something that is easily "scammed" for a real thing. If you can't take action against the seller ... it's just one of the life "experiences" we all endure at some point ... move on, and learn from it.

Well I don't think it is all his fault because he did not know it was a fake but he should have know better than buying it on line there are so many con artist out there you should always be wary of purchasing items on line or giving out to much personal info about yourself over a computer. He needs to get you a real ring from a real jeweler one he will talk to in person and your diamond should be certified and come with a certificate proving it is real

I would be pissed! By the way, there is no way that he is convinced that it is real if he payed for the thing. He is lying to you. I am sure that he loves you. He just wanted to give you a ring that you would love and this was the only way that he could afford it. As for your family finding out....totally scold your sister. She should never have told your whole family. I would have your fiance buy you a real ring, even if it is small than the huge 3 ct. you currently have.

An engagement ring is a symbol of love, and a promise of a lifetime... so whether it's a 3 carat diamond or a curtain ring, it shouldn't matter! you're saying 'i do' to the man not to the ring!

re the fraud, that's another issue which you might want to tackle from a legal point of view

There should be nothing to deal with, I'm guessing part of you is just worried about what others think. A woman about to be married has to be mature enough not to get sucked in that way, just be happy with what you have and your man. Ignore sniggers, if that is what they are doing. Everyone knows the ring is symbolic, and no one said it has to be a diamond anymore. Some CZ look better and more sparkley than diamonds, anyway. Congrats!

First off how could he not know? First off a 3 carat ring is well over 20K. Would you not go to a reputable store or online dealer for a purchase that big? Would you not get it insured right away? He had to know what he was getting you was not the real deal

Depending on how much you trust the dealer you went to to clean the stone, you may want to get a second opinion, I wouldn't put it past a store to tell you something like that to get you to spend money.

But I would take legal action ASAP against the place you bought the ring.

The ring should not matter, a good heart is better then any diamond. So far as your family who cares, you should worry more about the future of your marriage. If he bought it on line that was stupid, he can contact the better business bureau and see what steps he can take to file a claim against that business.

good luck
