Hello Littlebitch (love the name)
I am PectiWitan (aka a Hedge Witch). Witan (witta) and wicca (small W) are the same thing. Witan & wiccan have the same basic meaningand that is literally "WIse One". I am a solitary, we don't have covens (that would be Wiccan). I am a practitioner of Scottish Witchcraft. A pretty good book on the subject is "Scottish Witchcraft The History & Magick of the Picts" by Raymond Buckland. Basically for me, it simply put a name to what I had been practicing for years. PectiWita goes back many years before Wicca. Check it out if you get a chance. And contrary to other posts it can be traced back to before 563 CE when the Pictish people were visited by an Irish Missonary named St. Columba. The practice pre-dates Christ but I am not sure they themselves called it witan.

Wicca is a neo-Pagan religion, formed and codified by Gerald Garner in the 1950s.
"Witta" is another religion that claims to be ancient, but the earliest known reference is Edain McCoy's book "Witta: An Irish Pagan Tradition". In my opnion, it's just another Wicca off-shoot from just another Wicca book author. Not to say there's no validity in practicing any of these, but there's really no evidence of any of them being "ancient".

Witta is the name of a modern Wiccan tradition described by author Edain McCoy in her book Witta: An Irish Pagan Tradition.
Originally McCoy claimed that Witta originated in Ireland, and was of ancient origin. However, as the tradition bears no resemblance to ancient Irish Paganism, those familiar with actual Irish traditions believe McCoy herself invented the tradition, or was unwittingly taught by someone who invented it. McCoy claims to have been introduced to the tradition by a woman named Mollie she met at an Irish dance gathering.
The author herself has said about the book Witta: "That’s the book that makes me cringe the most. I see places where I didn’t explain things well, or where I hadn’t thought through faulty research. It’s like getting whacked in the head as suddenly you think, 'I can’t believe I put that in print.' "
Hope that helps!

Witta is a supposedly ancient Celtic religion! It's also what stuffy little "We're so better than those solitary Wiccans are becuase we're in a coven" traditionalists call Solitary Wicca, since they refuse to acept that we're just as good as them!
