I was curious what handgun officers carry? i know it differs from department to department i was just wondering what most departments do? the department I was looking at joining allows any firearm so long as it fires 9mm or .45 rounds? also does your department issue you a firearm or are you allowed to use your personal firearm (to include engraved firearms if you have one)?

A survey that was done two year ago showed that Glocks had 60% of the police market. The vast bulk of calibers were in 9MM and .40S&W.

Few police departments use the .45ACP these days except for SWAT and other high risk jobs. Very few department will allow a 1911 type pistol (single action auto) in service. While there is nothing wrong with the 1911 type pistol, it does require that officer's be properly trained and there is a terrible perception of the general (uneducated) public about carry a loaded gun with the hammer ******.

The 9mm phase is about over in LE, it started with the high capacity magazine thing and then there were administrators who thought that it was such a low caliber and small round that it wouldn't hurt anybody...but the officer who needed it to defend his life. Every PD I know is either in 40 cal or 45. 9 is a crack dealer's gun cuz they see it in the videos and think its cool. Most of the shootouts between gangs and crackdealers are done with 9's and I wish they would go to larger calibers so they could kill each other more often.

When revolvers was the choice, it was the Smith & Wesson Model 10 revolver in .38 special caliber. Today, the replacement for that gun is the Glock Model 22 semi-auto in .40 S&W caliber. Another popular police handgun are the Glock Model 17 and Model 19 in 9mm.

Issued a .40 caliber pistol.
When off-duty I have a smaller version of the same .40 caliber pistol which is issued to staff officers only.
When I was a young cop I carried (over the years) the department issued .38 revolver, 9mm pistol and off duty my own .45 pistol or a .38 snubnose.
All off duty guns must be registered and sanctioned by the department and you must qualify with them twice a year along with your duty weapon.
