In my algebra class there is a thing for extra credit (and i really need it)...It has 2 plastic squares that are clear at the 2 ends, connected by 4 plastic clear bars at each corner. In the middle it has string weaved in what looks like 2 cones conected by their tops. Do you know what it is?

Sounds like you are describing "String Art" which in 2d is a Bezier Curve and in 3D forms a Bezier Surface. (see link).

I saw something like this a long time ago. I don't remember its function, but drops of oil were slowly dripping down along the strings from a reservoir above into one below. The whole thing was lit by coloured lights. A part of a decorative light fixture?

Perhaps it represents sections of a cone: circle, ellipse, hyperbola, parabola.

i donnt know the exact name but it guess it is the ancient clock using sand to calculate time
