I honestly think they tried to branch out too fast. Most of the locations in Denver are closed now. They were really busy the first year and then no one went there anymore. Maybe it's just that they all figured out doughnuts aren't really good for you?

Krispy Kreme donuts are still alive but not as well as they used to be. The stores in the SoCal area have been closing faster than opening...and some have become Chic Filet (sp). Best guess is that folks have realized that a bunch of starches dipped in molten fat and then covered with sugar might not be the best thing for you to eat.

Krispy Kreme expanded too quickly. Then, to make it appear that they met cetain sales figures and appease stockholders, the company did a couple of accounting "tricks" like sending more donuts to retailers at the end of the year, counting the sales, and then calculating the return in the next fiscal year. When discovered, this of course sent their stock plunging. Additionally the low-carb diet craze hurt them.

Two new ones just opened in our area. Since they are franchised, maybe the local owners were having problems. We lost all of our Little Ceasar's a couple of years ago because the local franchisee just drove his business into the ground. Many of them have reopened under new ownership with the last year.

True. Which is a shame. There's nothing better than chocolate donut with iced whipped cream in it.
