A big ice storm is moving in and they are preparing to lose power just like we did two years ago. Last year I was very lucky that I only lost it for a few hours, while others were out for a week plus. If I dont get as lucky this time, what is the best way to keep my son, cat, and self warm? I cant afford to go buy a generator

No generator, so no electricity. OK... well, do you have a gas hot water heater? Then you could use steam heat to some extent. You can insulate like crazy. Get out the warm clothes and the sleeping bags. hang some blankets or sleeping bags over the windows. Keep everyone in one room to make use of the body heat. You could buy those chemical foot or hand warmers. Also, you could go out and buy hot beverages to drink. You can spend the days at the library or mall or public places that are heated. If you have a wood fireplace, well you know what to do with that.

Layers of loose fitting clothes insulate well. Easier to take them off to cool down than the other way around.
Wear hats indoors - a lot of body heat is lost through the head.
Blankets.
Share body heat under the blankets.
Confine yourselves to a central room and close off the rest of the house.
DO NOT USE ANY DEVICE WITH AN OPEN FLAME FOR HEAT! ITS A SOURCE OF CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING.
Be sure you have enough to eat - got to have fuel to burn to make heat.
Drink water and stay hydrated.
