My cat/kitten is about 9 month old. He had his first "accident" last night. I could hear him scratching the rug non-stop so I got up to see what he was doing....Well he was scratching the rug to pull up the yarn threads to cover a #2! Ok, I stayed really calm and I didn't yell at him because I could tell that he was embarrassed since he was trying to cover it up.

I picked it up, cleaned the area with an orange cleaner. Spray some febreeze and dusted the area with Baking Soda to remove any minor odor (that way he wouldn't use that area again).

The whole time I was cleaning, he ran behind the bathroom door and peeked around the corner to watch. I tried to get him to come out and play with him but he just backed up.

As soon as I was back in bed he went back to tearing up carpet pieces and trying to make a pile.....

Not only do I probaly have a bare carpet now...I think my cat was embarrassed at what happended.

What could I do? Should I of done something else?

This seems like a true accident to as I checked his litter box and there were more bowels in there. Maybe he was on his way to the litter box and he couldn't make it :-(

My cat had this happen once. It happened because there was hair holding it to her bum and she was scooting around trying to get it off. She was really embarrassed too. You did the right thing by not yelling at her. I would just give her a little extra attention for a while and she will be better soon. It will be okay. You did good! My baby is fine now too! Good Luck!

my cat did this many times to me but it was just pee. try these steps...
1. make sure the litter box is clean. cats like to go potty in clean places and when the litter box gets to full they will go somwere else
2. when you get goes potty in the litter box praies him and pet him and say good cat, so they know o im getting attetion for going to the bathroom in the box.
3. do not try and play with the cat after it goes potty on the carpet, it's not a good habit, dont hit or yell just ignore them and fallow stpe 2.
4. it could be jelouse of another cat, maybe it saw one at the door. it might have been marking it's territoy.
hopes this helps and good luck

Cats seem to be very cerebral animals. It may not have simply been an accident. From experience, many things cats do seem to be completely deliberate, as opposed to dogs, who seem to have genuine accidents.

If your cat is going on the floor, it is probably for a specific reason, rather then an accident.

As for him being embarrassed, I dont believe cats have that emotion. Cats naturally try to cover their "business", as a defense mechanism. It is a genetic inheritance. As long as he smells feces in that spot, he will continue to try to cover it up.

Aww, haha. I don't think there's any need to take him to the vet. It's natural for cats to try and cover what they made... Just pet him and let him know it's okay! If he's still backing away just offer him some treats or be patient and let him come to you.

LOL @ your cat was "embarrassed"!! Cats don't get embarrassed! He was probably afraid he would get in trouble...he knew he poo'ed in the wrong place and was watching to see what your reaction was going to be. You handled it just fine, especially since this does not seem to be a problem or a normal occurence and you seem to be a good "cat parent".

I'm pretty sure cats don't get embarrassed. They aren't human, they don't have that emotion. You did the right thing. Scolding the cat would do no good.
